This is the message delivered at a consultation workshop on social assistance for disaster risk management and shock-responsiveness in Việt Nam organised by the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs. The result of a study on social assistance for disaster risk management and shock-responsiveness in Việt Nam was reviewed at the workshop held in Hà Nội on Monday. Asian, European states meet to discuss joint action on climate change
(VEN) - Some 200 delegates and experts from dozens of Asian and European states met last month in the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho to discuss how best to adapt to climate change while attaining development targets. The “Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) Conference on Climate Action to Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals – Ways Forward” was held on June 19-20. Greater government efforts The Mekong Delta is the largest agricultural production center in the country, contributing 50 percent of the country’s rice, 65 percent of seafood and 70 percent of fruit. However, the bounty and development of the Mekong Delta is facing tremendous challenges from climate change. In 2016, severe drought and saline intrusion strongly affected 11 of the 13 Mekong Delta provinces. Vietnam is ranked among the five countries likely to be most affected by climate change and the Mekong Delta is among the most vulnerable regions in Vietnam due to sea level rise. US government to support Mekong Delta people in climate change responses
US Ambassador to Vietnam Daniel J. Kritenbrink cutting a ribbon to inaugurate the "American Hangout" During the meeting, the US side will provide the participants with solutions and basic knowledge to help them respond to effects of climate changes. The US Ambassador on June 5 in Can Tho city participated in a seminar of the Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) under the theme “Protecting Mekong Delta’s environment”, which gathered over 120 young leaders. YSEALI is a US Government sponsored program launched in December 2013 with the aim of strengthening leadership and economic development in Southeast Asia and contributing to building a Southeast Asian community. It is set to feature four plenary sessions, exhibitions and local tours for participants, among other activities. According to the municipal People’s Committee, contents discussed at the event will focus on development issues in the context of climate change and the connection between climate change adaptation and sustainable development goals. Participants will also share experience in climate change adaptation capacity from Asian and European nations, while evaluating the role and participation of relevant parties in the work and proposing plans to promote the Asia-Europe climate partnership.
