The country had seven universities in the list for 2018 and five in 2017. The annual listing is compiled by Britain's QS Quacquarelli Symonds, a global higher education company. On this year's list, Vietnam National University-Ho Chi Minh City climbed up one place from last year to 143rd on the annual ranking. Its sister institution, Vietnam National University, Hanoi branch, fell 23 places to 147th this year while Ton Duc Thang University in HCMC made a big jump from the 291-300 group last year to 207th. The Hanoi University of Science and Technology maintained last year’s ranking in the 261-270 group, while Can Tho University in the Mekong Delta dropped from the 351-400 group to the 401-450 group. Hue University and Da Nang University in central Vietnam were placed in the 451-500 group. Infrastructure development to give southern region a push
Still the ‘engine’ of the country’s economic development, southern provinces have seen growth slowing down. After many years of waiting, Vam Cong, the second cable-stay bridge across the Hau River, after Can Tho bridge, has been put into operation. Analysts say that it would help the southwestern provinces improve their capability of connecting with HCMC and Cambodia. Vietnamese panoramas create noise at int’l photo contest
Shot last May, ‘River Flowers’ by Tran Minh Dung, which scooped third in the Open Built Environment and Architecture category, depicts hundreds of boats docked along Van Lam Wharf in northern Ninh Binh Province, 60 kilometers south of Hanoi. The boats were to carry tourists along the Ngo Dong River which were hugged by ripened rice paddies. In its 10th run, organizers announced the winners last Saturday. This year’s contest received 4,913 entries from 1,258 photographers in 72 countries and territories. Dung’s second shot, ‘Hoi An At Night’, was named among the category’s top 50. Around 30 kilometers south of Da Nang City, Hoi An grew from a small rural village to the busiest trading port in Southeast Asia in the 16th century, famed for its ceramics and high-grade silk. Vietnamese carriers keen to fly to Thailand amid tourism boom
Thailand was Vietnam’s fastest growing tourist market in the first 11 months of this year, with arrivals increasing by a whopping 47.1 percent to 451,000, according to the General Statistics Office. In comparison, the numbers from Vietnam’s two biggest markets, China and South Korea, grew by 15.3 percent and 22.4 percent. Travel within ASEAN, of which both Thailand and Vietnam are members, is visa-free. Around one million Vietnamese visited Thailand in 2018, taking Vietnam into the kingdom's top 10 tourism markets, the Tourism Authority of Thailand reported. Low-cost carrier Vietjet Air on Monday announced plans to begin a direct service between Ho Chi Minh City and Pattaya, which has the world's largest red light district and been the busiest tourist destination in Southeast Asia for years.
