Vietnam stresses importance of maritime and aviation security in East Sea

Hoang Xuan Chien made the comment while delivering a speech at the ASEAN Defense Senior Officials’ Meeting Plus (ADSOM ) in Phnom Penh on May 18. He stressed the need to comply with the Declaration of the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea (DOC) and accelerate the early signing of a practical and effective Code of Conduct in the East Sea (COC). Vietnam consistently pursues resolving disputes at sea by peaceful means, on the basis of international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), he affirmed. Defense leader meets with U.S. and U.N. officials
The Vietnamese general led a high-ranking Vietnamese military delegation to accompany Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh who was on his working trip to the U.S. to attend the ASEAN - U.S. Special Summit. On May 16, at the U.N. Headquarters, Sr. Lt. Gen. Pham Hoai Nam worked with General Birame Diop, military adviser and assistant secretary-general. At the meeting, the Vietnamese general thanked the U.N. for choosing and supporting Vietnam in deploying the Level-2 Field Hospital Rotation 4 and the Engineering Company Rotation 1 to the U.N. peacekeeping missions in South Sudan (UNMISS) and Abyei (UNISFA). At the meeting, the two officials expressed their delight at the flourishing development of the Vietnam-Japan extensive strategic partnership and effective cooperation in different areas, including bilateral defense ties. They emphasized that over the past time, despite the COVID-19-caused impacts, the bilateral defense cooperation has been maintained and boosted, especially in exchange of delegations, military medicine, training, U.N. peacekeeping operations, and mutual support at multilateral forums.
