"The United States and Japan, together with 11 other nations will be launching" the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity, or IPEF, Biden said at a press conference alongside Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. "This framework is a commitment to working with our close friends and partners in the region on challenges that matter most to ensuring economic competitiveness in the 21st century," he said. Biden was due to make a formal rollout of the framework later Monday. He did not say what countries had already signed up to IPEF, which the White House is billing as a framework for what will ultimately become a tight-knit group of trading nations. Unlike traditional trade blocs, there is no plan for IPEF members to negotiate tariffs and ease market access -- a tool that has become increasingly unpalatable to U.S. voters fearful of undermining homegrown manufacturing. Instead, the program foresees integrating partners through agreed standards in four main areas: the … [Read more...] about Biden says 13 countries to join new Asia-Pacific trade framework

Vietnam’s impeccable journey to SEA Games men’s football glory
Vietnam (in red) entered SEA Games 31 with lots of doubts, especially after the U23 team suffered a poor performance at the friendly Dubai Cup, where they ranked 9th out 10 teams. In the first game, Vietnam played Indonesia, a contender for the gold medal in this SEA Games. Indonesia’s defensive approach caused many difficulties for Vietnam in the first half. But in the second half, the overage players helped Vietnam break the tie, with goals from Nguyen Tien Linh and Do Hung Dung, before Le Van Do secured the 3-0 win for the hosts. Coach Park Hang-seo and his assistants celebrated when Hung Dung made it 2-0. This was a special game for Park since his opponent was fellow South Korean coach, Shin Tae-yong. However, in the next game with the Philippines, problems started to show. Although Vietnam dominated with 80 percent possession and dozens of shots, they couldn’t find a way to score on a rainy night at Viet Tri … [Read more...] about Vietnam’s impeccable journey to SEA Games men’s football glory
More favourable rule system urged for healthcare PPPs
Speakers at last week’s conference noted that dozens upon dozens of multinationals are interested in the healthcare PPP model in Vietnam. Photo: Chi Cuong At last week’s conference on the issue, hosted by VIR , Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment Tran Duy Dong said that Vietnam’s healthcare sector is facing a number of big issues, including rising infectious and non-communicable disease figures, hospital overload, and an ageing population. The pandemic has also revealed some weaknesses in the sector. “To further improve healthcare service quality and meet demand, mobilising financial resources for new development of infrastructure and medical equipment is a key requirement,” he noted. For the past five years, the government has looked to strengthen the implementation of a model for public-private partnerships (PPPs) for the public sector, including in healthcare services. However, according to VIR’s editor-in-chief Le Trong Minh, the picture of such investment in … [Read more...] about More favourable rule system urged for healthcare PPPs
Vietnam the only SEA Games champions without conceding a goal
Vietnam’s under-23 players have proved that they are a force to reckon with after a near-immaculate 31st Southeast Asian (SEA) Games campaign, where they did not concede a single goal, being the only title winners able to do so in the event’s history. The young Golden Stars racked up five wins and one draw throughout the tourney to claim the second SEA Games triumph since quenching their gold-medal thirst in 2019. That included their 1-0 victory over Thailand thanks to a sumptuous 83rd-minute header from Nham Manh Dung at My Dinh National Stadium in Hanoi on Sunday night. Previously, they defeated Malaysia 1-0 in the semifinals after beating Indonesia 3-0, Myanmar 1-0, and Timor Leste 2-0, and drew goalless against the Philippines in the group stage. They were the only squad in the SEA Games’ history that did not succumb to a single goal en route to the gold medal. All of the teams in the tournament took on Vietnam with a defensive tactic, except Thailand, who were … [Read more...] about Vietnam the only SEA Games champions without conceding a goal
Vietnam U23 team repeat feat of unbeaten streak
For coach Park Hang-seo, it was a repetition of the streak he had initiated with the U23 team after winning the previous SEA Games gold medal. The U23 team had gone 12 games unbeaten from March 2019 until January 2020, winning nine and drawing three while scoring 35 goals and conceding four. After losing 1-2 to North Korea at the 2020 U23 Asian Cup, Vietnam started another unbeaten streak from October 2021 until the SEA Games final on May 22 this year. In this streak, Vietnam won 11, drew one and scored 19 goals without conceding any. However, the two unbeaten streaks are still not a record in Southeast Asia. U23 Thailand went unbeaten for 19 games from 2003 to 2006, including 17 victories that helped them win the SEA Games gold in 2003 and 2005. The unique record for the U23 Vietnam team is that they kept a clean sheet in all their 12 unbeaten games, a feat that no other U23 team in Southeast Asia have achieved. Vietnam also became the first team since 1979 to win the SEA Games … [Read more...] about Vietnam U23 team repeat feat of unbeaten streak
