Nearly three decades after the establishment of diplomatic relations, the Vietnam-South Africa cooperation has flourished with achievements in major fields of politics, diplomacy, national defence, security and trade, among others. Of note, South Africa is currently Vietnam’s largest trade partner in Africa as the average annual growth rate of two-way trade surpassed US$1.2 billion in the 2019-2021. Vietnam reports additional 1,114 fresh Covid-19 cases, no death
An additional 1,114 new Covid-19 infections were confirmed on Saturday, raising the national tally to over 10.71 million, according to the Ministry of Health. Illustrative photo According to the ministry's report, most of the new patients are locally-transmitted cases confirmed in the country with some localities seeing the highest numbers including Hanoi 285 cases, Vinh Phuc (70), Yen Bai (68), Phu Tho (66), Nghe An (59). As of Saturday evening, the number of Covid-19 patients in Vietnam has increased to over 10.71 million. The country now stands 12th among 227 countries and territories worldwide in the number of infections. On May 28, an additional 8,463 more patients recovered from the disease, raising the number of recoveries in the country to over 9.43 million. Apple looks to bump up production in Vietnam
Apple has been reliant on Chinese manufacturing for over a decade, with analysts estimating that 90 percent of its products are made by contract manufacturers in the country. This reliance has made Apple face considerable risks in ensuring stable supply, the journal said. In the meantime, it added, Apple factories in India have witnessed continuing strong sales. Vietnam and other Southeast Asian countries are ideal destinations for Apple to expand its supply chain. Vietnam currently houses 31 factories producing and assembling electronic parts and equipment for Apple products, such as cameras and screens. Plastic packaging a cause for concern in online shopping era in Vietnam
The trend of online food purchasing, which has prevailed since the COVID-19 outbreak, and the prevalent use of plastic packaging in retail are increasing plastic waste volume, potentially causing long-term health risks. During the strict COVID-19 restrictions last year, 75 percent of people living in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City used online food delivery services, according to a survey of Q&Me, a market research firm. Such food is usually packed in boxes made of plastic that accounted for 64 percent of the total volume of materials used for the food packaging industry. Many vendors prefer using plastic bags to contain various items sold online and at bricks-and-mortar shops. Vietnam chess ace to compete in Prague Masters
The chess festival in Prague, Czech Republic will consist of four groups of different levels. The lowest is the Open and anyone can register for it. The next three levels are Futures, Challengers and Masters. Liem is invited to the Masters group, along with nine other grandmasters, including Czech-Vietnamese player Nguyen Thai Dai Van. The average Elo rating of the 10 grandmasters is 2,693. Liem is the third seed in this tournament. Dai Van is the number three player of Czech Republic. His parents are Vietnamese. Van has a similar style of play as Liem. This is his second time in the Masters group of the tournament. Last year, he drew all seven matches in it. For Liem, this is his first time in the Czech Republic, and also his first standard chess tour since the Gibraltar Masters in January 2020.
