Vietnamese movie “Old Father” reaches record revenue

April 7, 2021 by vietnamnet.vn

Since it was launched on March 3, “Bo Gia” (Old Father), a family movie starring comedian and TV host Tran Thanh, has earned VND400 billion (nearly $20 million), a record in the country’s cinema history.

The revenue as of April 4 was from 5.3 million tickets sold.

Released on March 5, “Old Father” has set new records for the fastest Vietnamese movie to reach ticket sales of VND100 billion and VND200 billion. The film collected VND100 billion (nearly $5 million) in just four days after being released, beating the previous record of six days held by “Gai Gia Lam Chieu 3” (The Last Egg 3).

On March 19, its revenue reached VND290 billion, officially surpassing Hollywood blockbuster “Avengers Endgame” (VND285 billion) to become the highest-grossing cinema movie in Vietnam.

After a month, “Old Father” remained in the top 2 at the box office.

The movie distributor Galaxy Studio and producer plan to release “Old Father” abroad, specifically in Singapore and Malaysia from April 22, and perhaps Thailand after that.

5,3 million people watched “Old Father” at cinemas.

“Old Father” centers around Sang, an old motorbike rider who lives in a low-income neighborhood in HCMC. Although Sang is poor and suffers from an illness, he always sacrifices himself for his family.

The film’s production cost is estimated at VND23 billion (US$1 million), with an all-star cast comprising Tran Thanh, People’s Artist Ngoc Giau, Le Giang, Tuan Tran, Ngan Chi, La Thanh, Quoc Khanh, Le Trang, Che Nguyen Quynh Chau and Minh Tu.

The “Old Father” movie is an adaptation of a web drama of the same name directed by Vu Ngoc Dang. The web drama version, which was released on YouTube in early 2020, was the most viewed web drama in Vietnam with more than 90 million views for its five episodes.

Seven Vietnamese films with the highest domestic ticket sales to date comprise “Old Father” with VND400 billion, “Flirt with pregnant wife again” with VND191.8 billion, “Mat Biec” (Dreamy Eyes) with VND180 billion, “Tiec trang mau” (Perfect Strangers) with VND175 billion, “Em chua 18” (Jailbait) with VND171 billion, “Furie” with VND160 billion (up to VND200 billion from both local and foreign markets) and “The Last Egg 3” with VND165 billion.

“We feel highly encouraged by the market response to the film so far, which was sold just based on the director’s sizzle reel and later a promo reel.”

It is set to release in Vietnam on May 14.

Le Van Kiet, 42, is a Vietnamese-American who graduated from the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) School of Film and Television.

Feeling stressed? Release your negative energy at this Hanoi ‘rage room’

September 23, 2017 by tuoitrenews.vn

A facility in Hanoi has been offering a unique service which allows customers to smash a variety of used objects to relieve their stress and anger.

As watching movies, playing sport, and traveling have become too much of a cliché, young people in the Vietnamese capital have been partaking in the ‘smashing trend’ when it comes to stress relief and anger management.

Such a service is offered at a facility named ‘rage room’ in Dong Da District, where four confined rooms are specially designed with various old objects, from glasses and bowls to televisions.

According to Nguyen Minh Thinh, owner of the venue, his previous life was full of stress, which could not be dealt with by common solutions.

As the rage room model has been quite popular in several developed countries, Thinh decided to open his own, which has received positive feedback from customers.

Thinh’s customers are mainly high school students and people around 15 years old and under.

Each client is required to pay VND198,000 (US$8.68) to be able to smash ten pottery items, ten glasses, and one electric appliance within a maximum period of 45 minutes.

The service also comes with complimentary water, towel, helmet, and protection gears.

Thinh asserted that all activities within the rooms are under close supervision and shall not harm anyone.

“Users of the service often take 10 to 15 minutes to express all of their anger,” the owner elaborated.

“Most of them said they felt better physically and mentally after spending time in the rooms.”

Nguyen Son, a frequent visitor of the rage room, said he often comes to the place whenever he is under stress.

“I cannot really explain that feeling, but I always feel much more comfortable after smashing the objects,” Son stated.

Dr. Lam Hieu Minh, a psychiatrist at the Ho Chi Minh City University Medical Center, considered breaking things a temporary solution for stress relief.

People can feel a boost in their mood after the action, but the effect is not good for one’s mental health in a long-term manner.

Meanwhile, Pham Thi Thuy, an expert on psychology, stated that there are other ways to solve short temper, namely drinking a glass of cold water, taking a deep breath, or distracting oneself with other activities.

As a permanent solution, people should change their way of thinking about their negative feeling into a more positive perception.

“We should learn to control our anger and our own feelings,” Thuy stated.

The film’s producer, Tfilm Entertainment, has announced it is working with its foreign partners to release Thiên Thần Hộ Mệnh in Australia, Canada, Hungary, France, Ireland, the UK and US.

The film will also be in cinemas in Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines and the Czech Republic.

Thiên Thần Hộ Mệnh features three young women who feed and dress life-sized baby dolls as if they are living things.

Its trailer, which features haunting scenes, has attracted more than 103,000 views on YouTube.

Director Vu combined Vietnamese and Hollywood styles in his film.

“My film reflects the weak points in young people’s psychology,” said Vu, a graduate of Loyola Marymount University in the US.

Vu began his career in Vietnam in 2008 after his first film in the country, Chuyện Tình Xa Xứ (Passport to Love), won the title Favourite Film at the Golden Kite Awards from the Vietnam Cinematography Association. The romantic comedy was distributed in the US in 2009.

In 2012, his third film, Thiên Mệnh Anh Hùng (Blood Letter), a kung fu production, won the jury prize at the International Film Festival in Hanoi.

One year later, his Bí Mật Thảm Đỏ (Scandal), a work about the dark side of show business, received the Golden Kite Prize for Best Director.

His two thriller films, Quả Tim Máu (Vengeful Heart) and Người Bất Tử (The Immortal), were blockbusters in 2014 and 2018.

Vu loves capturing landscapes across Vietnam in his films.

“I love working in Vietnam. I have learned a lot about the country’s history, and its traditional culture and lifestyle,” said Vu.

Vu’s Mắt Biếc (Dreamy Eyes), released in 2019, was chosen by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to compete in the Best Foreign Language Film category at the Oscar awards ceremony this year.

The film was listed among the industry’s top 10 hits with more than VND127 billion (US$5.5 million) at the Vietnamese box office.

Thiên Thần Hộ Mệnh will be distributed in Vietnam by Thien Ngan Galaxy Studio.
