Viet Nam News A series of paintings by Vietnamese artist Hoàng Định and his Dutch colleague Somsak Chaituch will be on display this week at the Việt Nam Fine Arts Museum. Hồng Vân reports. Hoàng Định is among the very few painters in Việt Nam to follow abstract expressionism, a form of art that is often characterised by flamboyant strokes and emphasises free, spontaneous and personal emotions. He will exhibit his finest paintings at the Dancing Colours of Nature exhibition, which will run at the Việt Nam Fine Arts Museum from October 28 to November 6. STEM’s fine, but we need liberal arts to stem the rot
I am a sophomore double-majoring in English and Economics. For my January course, I took an econ course in Technology, Education, and Labor markets. The one key fact that I took away from it is this: education systems are all heart and eyes for economic growth, putting education itself at the beck and call of the economy. Which means that behind and despite all the lofty rhetoric, we are trained to become preferably well-oiled cogs in the market machine. What’s that? What does the market need now? Hi-tech skills? Here you go: We’ll turn out batches of well-educated, highly skilled, disciplined workers. The aim of higher education is to prepare students like me to be useful members of society. Institutions of higher education prepare us for the job market, because we accept that it is through our vocations that we make our biggest contributions to society. World Press Photo Exhibition 2018 opens in Hanoi
The World Press Photo Exhibition mark its first arrival back in Hanoi after 15 years when it opened on June 16 evening, showcasing 130 most memorable press photographs from around the globe. Chairman of the Hanoi municipal People’s Committee Nguyen Duc Chung (C), Dutch Ambassador to Vietnam Nienke Trooste (L), and delegates at the exhibition. Taking place over three weeks, at the Vietnam University of Fine Arts, No. 42 Yet Kieu Street, Hanoi, the event is organised by the Embassy of the Netherlands in Vietnam, in collaboration with the Vietnam Journalists’ Association (VJA), aiming to honour the winners from 125 countries who sent over 73,000 photos to the 61st World Press Photo Contest last April. Viet Nam News HÀ NỘI — Global urgent issues such as terrorism, pollution and the refugee crisis are reflected through photos displayed at the World Press Photo Exhibition in Hà Nội. The exhibition opened yesterday, marking its second appearance in Việt Nam, the first being 15 years ago. The exhibition this year consists of 130 photographs, in a number of categories such as contemporary issues, environment, general news, nature, people and sports. The winners were chosen by an independent jury that reviewed more than 73,000 photographs entered by 4,548 photographers from 125 countries. The 2018 winners were announced at the World Press Photo Awards Show on April 12 in Amsterdam, where Venezuelan photographer Ronaldo Schemidt was honoured for his jaw-dropping contribution. Lacquer paintings are a Vietnamese trademark
Viet Nam News HÀ NỘI — Lacquerpaintings belong to the Vietnamese, said Bùi Thị Thanh Mai, deputy-director of the Việt Nam Museum of Fine Arts, while concluding a seminar on lacquer art held yesterday in Hà Nội. "Some countries like Britain, France and Germany also showcase lacquer paintings, but the term sơn mài [lacquer] was created by Vietnamese," Mai said.
