‘Copycat’ mass shootings becoming deadlier, experts warn after New York attack
An 18-year-old white man suspected of fatally shooting 10 people in a Black neighborhood in Buffalo, New York, appears to be the latest in a line of "copycat" gunmen carrying out deadlier mass shootings inspired by previous attackers, experts warned on Sunday. Payton Gendron, who surrendered to police on Saturday after the attack, apparently publicized a racist manifesto on the internet and broadcast the attack in real time on social media platform Twitch, a live video service owned by Amazon.com. Authorities called the mass killing an act of "racially motivated violent extremism." Experts say the trend of mostly young white men being inspired by previous racist gun massacres is on the rise, citing recent mass shootings, including the 2015 attack at a Black church in Charleston, South Carolina, a 2018 shooting at a synagogue in Pittsburgh and a 2019 attack at a Walmart in an Hispanic neighborhood of El Paso. Adam Lankford, a criminology professor at the University of Alabama, … [Read more...] about ‘Copycat’ mass shootings becoming deadlier, experts warn after New York attack

US accuses casino tycoon Wynn of acting as Chinese agent
Wynn's lawyers denied the allegations, saying he had never acted as an agent of the Chinese government and "had no obligation to register under the Foreign Agents Registration Act" (FARA). From at least June through August 2017, Wynn contacted Trump and members of his administration to convey a Chinese request that Trump cancel the visa of a Chinese businessperson who had sought asylum in the United States, the department said. The department's civil suit alleges it had advised Wynn in 2018, 2021 and April 2022 to register as an agent of China under FARA but he declined to do so. Wynn stepped down as Wynn Resorts CEO in early 2018. "Where a foreign government uses an American as its agent to influence policy decisions in the United States, FARA gives the American people a right to know," said Matthew G. Olsen, assistant attorney general for the department's national security division. The suit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. It seeks a … [Read more...] about US accuses casino tycoon Wynn of acting as Chinese agent

Vietnam school in hot water for asking students to detail slapping of classmate
A middle school in the north-central province of Quang Binh, where a teacher last month asked classmates of a student to take turns in slapping him a total of 230 times for “swearing” in class, has stirred further public anger by asking those concerned to detail the event in a questionnaire. A sixth grader at Duy Ninh Middle School in Quang Binh was hospitalized in late November after he was repeatedly slapped on the face by his classmates as a punishment from his teacher for allegedly using foul language in the classroom. The math teacher, Nguyen Thi Phuong Thuy, asked the whole class to give the student ten slaps each after he was accused of “swearing” by another classmate. In total, the boy suffered 230 slaps to his face, with the 231st coming from Thuy herself after he responded to the punishment by saying, “I hate you, teacher!” Thuy has been suspended from work pending her final punishment, while Quang Binh police officers have launched legal proceedings against the case … [Read more...] about Vietnam school in hot water for asking students to detail slapping of classmate
