U.S. FDA approves Eli Lilly’s treatment for type 2 diabetes
The U.S. Food & Drug Administration said on Friday it had approved Eli Lilly's injected drug tirzepatide, which has the brand name Mounjaro, to help improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes. The FDA said Mounjaro, along with diet and exercise, improved blood sugar levels and was more effective than the other diabetes therapies with which it was compared in clinical studies. Mounjaro is designed to activate receptors for hormones involved in blood sugar control. It is administered by injection under the skin once weekly, with the dose adjusted as tolerated to meet blood sugar goals. Lilly reported last month that a late-stage trial of tirzepatide showed that it helped obese patients lose more than 20% of their weight, leading Wall Street to boost sales forecasts for the drug. Analysts currently project 2026 sales of tirzepatide to reach $4.7 billion, according to Refinitiv. A blind woman in the northern province of Bac Giang is calling for help as she faces kidney failure, but her family are too poor to cover the treatment. Trieu Thi Yen, 46, from Yen Dung District has been suffering from kidney failure for 14 years. She has to come to Bac Giang General Hospital for dialysis three times a week. Yen and her son Yen said that she was blind since birth. In 2005, she started working for a massage facility for the blind in Hai Duong Province. Then, three years later, she gave birth to her son Trieu Van Hung. When her son was three years old, she faced tiredness and oedema. She also lost breast milk. She was diagnosed with the final stages of kidney failure. She was totally shocked. Due to financial difficulties, she could not afford to buy powdered milk for her child. The couple said an acquaintance had given them two cans in red and green. Thinking that the green one is beer and the other coke, they drank it. Only when they experienced no taste from the fluid, did the couple check the information printed on the cans and realized they had drunk car engine coolant. The hospital admitted them for emergency aid and had their stomachs cleaned. They remained hospitalized for three days before release.
