A 16-year-old boy from the northern Vietnamese province of Nam Dinh was praised for jumping into a river to save a young girl from drowning on Sunday last week, an official confirmed on Wednesday. The hero is Bui Hai An, a young resident of Hai Trung Commune in Hai Hau District, Nam Dinh, according to the local official. Footage from a security camera installed in a local house showed that two teenagers were riding a motorbike on a riverside road on the afternoon of July 31 when they saw someone struggling in the Ninh Co River. The two teens ran to a nearby house to call for help. That residence turned out to be An’s and he immediately ran to the riverside, taking off his T-shirt before jumping into the water to rescue the victim. In the women's 100 m event, Du Y placed 45th out of 55 athletes as she finished her run in 11.95 seconds, not enough to get her to the next round. Y was the only Vietnamese athlete that met the standard for 2022 World Athletics U20 Championships, which takes place from Aug. 1 to 8 in Cali, Columbia. The tournament features 1,533 athletes from 145 countries competing in 45 events. In SEA Games 31 hosted by Vietnam in May, Y finished her run in 11.94 seconds and only placed sixth out of eight athletes in the women's 100 m event. She also placed sixth in the women's 200 meters with a result of 24.50 seconds. Y is considered the successor of pace queen Le Tu Chinh, who is an expert in the 100 m distance. Two children were seriously injured after a bomb of unknown origin exploded in the area where they were playing in northern Son La Province on Wednesday. Doctors conduct a surgery on a boy who is injured in a bomb explosion in Son La on August 3 According to reports from local authorities, the accident occurred on a road in Phieng Luong Commune at around 9.45 am when the two brothers aged four and seven dropped a bomb they collected somewhere in the area. "The bomb exploded after falling onto the road, leaving the two boys unconscious with various injures," the report said. "They were rushed to a local hospital and then transferred to the National Children's Hospital in Hanoi for further treatment." Vietnamese driver investigated following car crash that killed two teens
Police in Binh Dinh Province, south-central Vietnam are investigating a case in which a 29-year-old car driver hit three teenagers on a motorbike, killing two, after they appeared to intentionally block his way on Wednesday. The third teenager suffered injuries, according to Colonel Vo Duc Nguyen, director of the Binh Dinh Department of Public Security. Tran Xuan Hai, 29, a resident of Hoai An District, Binh Dinh, was driving his four-seater car to his wife’s house when Vo Phan Hoai Bao, 15, Nguyen Quoc Viet, 17, and Ngo Quang Linh, 16 – all from the same district – stopped their motorbike in front of Hai’s vehicle. Hai then drove his car into the back of the motorbike, killing Bao on the spot. Viet died en route to a medical center and Linh was injured. Capital punishment handed to group of young men involved in gun-related murder
Two people were sentenced to death earlier this week while many others received prison terms from two to 20 years for murder and storing and using military weapons in Vietnam. The People's Court in Long An Province ordered a death sentence for To Nhut Khanh, 29, and Tran Trung Thanh, 29, as well as a 20-year prison term for Le Thanh Phuc, 29, on Wednesday. Vo Tuan Vu, 23, will be jailed for two years and three months for storing military weapons and failing to report crimes. Pham Huynh Phuc Thien, 19, will also serve two years in prison, while To Phuoc Loc, 20, will spend a year and six months behind bars for failing to report crimes. Aside from Thanh, who resides in Ho Chi Minh City, all of the defendants live in Tien Giang Province in the Mekong Delta region of Vietnam. Flash flooding triggered by a near-record downpour on Friday over one of the hottest, driest spots on Earth has stranded nearly 1,000 people inside California's Death Valley National Park and forced its temporary closure, park officials said. About 60 cars belonging to park visitors and staff were buried in several feet of debris at the Inn at Death Valley, an historic luxury hotel near the park headquarters in Furnace Creek, site of a spring-fed oasis near the Nevada border, the park said in a statement. Floodwaters also pushed trash dumpsters into parked cars, shoving vehicles into each other, and swamped many facilities, some hotel rooms and business offices, it said. No injuries were reported. But about 500 visitors and 500 park staff were unable to leave the park because all roads into and out of Death Valley were closed, according to the statement.
