The surprise came to mind again last week when I heard news about a drunk driver ramming his car into a gas station in Hanoi, injuring eight people. Vietnam has an issue with drinking and driving. This isn't a new conversation, but it remains relevant because the issue has never been resolved. There have been many takes on why this has happened. It was said that fines and other punishment for drunk driving were too low to be a deterrent. Then businesses saw their business fall drastically, at least for a while, when the fines were doubled some time ago. There have been calls for driving licenses to be permanently revoked for drunk driving and that it is made a criminal offense. VPA’s General Staff launches sports festival in 2022
The practical program aims to create a chance for troops to exchange as well as to evaluate training quality and sports activities among its affiliated units. In addition, it also contributes to raising training quality and the organization of training and sports activities at all levels, meeting task requirements in the current context. Via the festival, the organizing board will select outstanding athletes to take part in other festivals in the whole military. This year’s event draws the participation of 450 athletes from 23 units. They compete in tennis and volleyball contents. Health Ministry orders strengthening reporting of new COVID-19 cases
The move came after a series of fast-spreading sub-variants of Omicron (BA.4, BA.5, BA.2.75 and BA.2.12.1) were reported in the country. According to the ministry’s General Department of Preventive Medicine, the number of COVID-19 cases has been on the rise in both Vietnam and around the world. The country is currently recording an average of about 2,000 new cases each day. The number of new cases is believed to be on the rise again. Therefore, in order to actively prevent and control the COVID-19 pandemic, the department told leaders of health departments nationwide to regularly and promptly review and report new cases of COVID-19. The localities must comply with regulations on reporting new cases and fully declare new cases of COVID-19 within 24 hours as prescribed by the ministry so that the figures can be sent to the National Steering Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control and the Prime Minister. The Vietnamese delegation, led by General Ngo Xuan Lich, member of the Politburo, Deputy Secretary of the Central Military Commission, Minister of National Defense, attended the conference. The conference focused on global and regional security issues, counter-terrorism, security in Europe and the Middle East, the situation in the Asia Pacific region, and the role of multilateral cooperation mechanisms in dealing with challenges.
