Rape of 10-year-old jolts US abortion debate

July 14, 2022 by e.vnexpress.net

The girl's ordeal of traveling to neighboring Indiana for the medical procedure was highlighted by President Joe Biden recently as he signed legislation aimed at helping women seeking abortions. A trigger law banning all abortions after six weeks, with no exceptions for rape or incest, came into force in Ohio last month after the nation's high court ended decades of constitutional protection for the right to end a pregnancy. The shocking case was questioned by conservative-leaning media outlets and Ohio's attorney general, who cast doubt on the story's veracity. But Columbus, Ohio police detective Jeffrey Huhn testified in court early Wednesday that the unidentified girl underwent an abortion in Indianapolis on June 30, the Columbus Dispatch reported. According to the paper, Huhn was testifying at the arraignment of a man arrested Tuesday by police who say he confessed to raping the child. Huhn also told the court that DNA samples obtained from the Indiana clinic were being … [Read more...] about Rape of 10-year-old jolts US abortion debate

State abortion bans prevent women from getting essential medication

July 15, 2022 by e.vnexpress.net

On Monday, Noblin's pharmacist said she could not give her the drug until she had confirmed with Noblin's doctor that the medication would not be used to induce an abortion. Missouri now bans nearly all abortions and methotrexate can be used to end a pregnancy. It also happens to be one of the first medicines prescribed by doctors to treat rheumatoid arthritis, which affects more than one million Americans. The pharmacy ultimately filled the prescription, but Noblin said she will likely switch to a different, more expensive medication in case they refuse to fill her prescription in the future. "It's infuriating," Noblin said. "It made me feel I couldn't be trusted with the medication prescribed to me simply because I have a uterus." Dozens of women in states including Texas, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, and Tennessee also have had problems getting their methotrexate, either because of issues at pharmacies or because they say their doctors have suspended prescribing the … [Read more...] about State abortion bans prevent women from getting essential medication

US House passes bill to protect right to travel for abortion

July 16, 2022 by e.vnexpress.net

The Democratic-controlled House voted 223 to 205, largely along party lines, to prevent states that have limited abortion from obstructing women's ability to seek care elsewhere. The bill faces long odds in the evenly divided Senate, where Republicans blocked similar legislation on Thursday. Roughly a dozen Republican-led states have moved to ban nearly all abortions since late June, when the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the Roe v. Wade ruling that had legalized abortion rights nationwide since 1973, and more states are expected to do so. Some Republicans in those states have tried to go further. Missouri legislators considered a bill that would allow civil lawsuits against anyone who aids a woman in seeking an out-of-state abortion. The issue received national attention after media reports on a 10-year-old girl who was raped in Ohio and had to travel to Indiana to obtain an abortion. "Congress has the authority and the responsibility to protect people from these … [Read more...] about US House passes bill to protect right to travel for abortion
