Passion for astrophysics

In childhood, Quan was curious about natural phenomena in the universe. “Why are there constellations?” “Where do shooting stars come from?” These were questions that Quan wanted to answer.

Quan scored first in the entrance exam for the math major class at the Hanoi-Amsterdam High School for the Gifted, and the exam for the chemistry major class at the High School for the Gifted in Natural Sciences.

The great achievements were why Quan’s friends called him superman.

Le Manh Cuong, his physics teacher, discovered Quan’s special love for constellations in the sky. Though astronomy and astrophysics was not a subject in the general education program, he decided to help Quan learn about it.

Later, it was the teacher who sent Quan to the national astrophysics team to attend the international competition. In 2019, Quan attended the International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics (IOAA) and won a gold medal with maximum scores.

After returning from the international competition, Quan began seeking an environment where he could study and conduct research.

He believed that leading schools such as MIT and Princeton would offer favorable conditions for students’ creativity, learning and promotion of their abilities, especially with the advice of leading professors in their fields.

Quan applied to the two schools because they are among a small number of schools that choose international students based on their abilities, not on candidates’ financial capability.

Quan had a strong profile when applying for the schools. The physics major had a 1600/1600 SAT and 8.0 IELTS. He twice won first prize in physics at the national competition for excellent students, when he was in the 11th and 12th grades.

Quan attended many national and international competitions and won a lot of medals, including the gold medal at the 2018 International Youth Science Olympia and gold medal at 2019 IOAA, gold medal at 2020 European Physics Olympiad.

The medals were not really made of gold, but from sweat during training, according to Quan. He said hopes he will have the chance to attend the International Physics Olympiad this year.

Speaking at the Theoretical Council’s meeting in Hanoi, the Party leader highly valued the council’s work during 2016-2021.

He also suggested some issues needing attention in the time ahead and asked for thorough understanding of the requirements in the political theoretical work in the new period.

The leader told the council to study new theoretical issues in the world, experiences of developed countries, along with scientific – technological revolutions.

A type of red sweet corn originating in Thailand has recently captured a lot of attention from both Vietnamese consumers and farmers.

The corn breed, named Ruby Queen, has been officially permitted to be cultivated and traded in the Vietnamese market, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development announced on Saturday.

According to Nguyen Quoc Ly, director of a center specializing in plant and crop testing under the agriculture ministry, this is the first sweet corn variety that is edible without the need to be boiled or cooked.

The Ruby Queen is characterized by its dark red color and sweet taste, along with rapid growth in just 58 to 62 days, Lu continued, adding that farmers are able to harvest around 10 to 12 metric tons of the crops per hectare.

The corn breed has been in demand, said Doan Van Toa, a farmer in the Mekong Delta province of Tien Giang who previously planted the crop for testing purposes.

Each seed of the sweet corn is selling for VND500 (US$0.02), Toa elaborated, adding that the seed is now quite rare due to the high demand.

A Ruby Queen corn is offered at VND20,000 ($0.86) to VND35,000 ($1.5) in the Vietnamese market, the farmer said.

Buyers can also purchase the products directly at local farms at VND5,000 ($0.2) apiece.

The prices are three to four times higher than those of regular corn varieties in the country.

According to Ta Wee Sak Pulam, who created the corn breed, the Ruby Queen is the world’s first-ever variety of sweet corn that has a reddish color.

It took Pulam and his company six years to research and create the type of crop, he added.

The number of seeds purchased by Vietnamese farmers over the past time is beyond expectation, Pulam continued, expressing his hope that the Ruby Queen will soon become popular in Vietnam, just like it did in Thailand.

Leading reporters to his closed snail farming area in Cua Tung Town in Quang Tri recently, Phan Van Dung pointed to the pond divided into cells amid a sand field. He said this was just one of his five sweet snail (Babylonia areolata) farms.

He pointed out a cell lined with black canvas, where snails were about to be harvested in several days.

“The price has reached a record high of VND360,000 per kilogram, twice as high as last year. I believe I can earn big money this year,” he said.

In 2005, he built a small hotel with 20 rooms which became the major source of income of his family. Now he earns money from both the hotel and snail farming, but the farming brings much higher revenue.

At first, he hatched shrimp, but he failed many times over five years. In 2016, he decided to breed snails, which he believed would bring high profit and low risks, after half a year of learning farming techniques in the south.

The main feed for snail is fresh shrimp and fish. As his farm is next to the sea, he also buys pompano to feed snails because it is cheap.

He harvested the first crop after 7-8 months and earned a lot from it. The snail price fluctuates between VND170,000 and 400,000 per kilogram.

Dung now runs five snail farms with total surface area of 18 hectares with output of 200 tons per annum. He never takes a loss with snail farming.

The snails sales to Chinese merchants and domestic sales bring total turnover of VND34 billion and profit of VND17 billion.

After showing reporters the ponds containing hundreds of tons of snails, Dung walked to an area with square water tanks and an oxygen conductor system.

The entire area, about one hectare, is used to produce snail breeders, and is divided into different compartments for parent snails to lay spawn and for a spawn hatchery. There is also a compartment to raise snails until they are standard size (40,000-50,000 snails per kilogram) and brought to ponds.

When he began farming snails, he had to buy breeders from other localities at high prices, so the profit was not high. In 2019, he decided to set up a breeder production area to establish a closed snail production line.
