Viet Nam News HÀ NỘI — The number of traffic accidents, traffic-related deaths and injuries in Việt Nam dropped in the first half of the year compared to the same period last year. According to the latest report by the National Traffic Safety Committee, from December 16, 2017 to June 15, 2018, about 9,000 traffic accidents were reported nationwide, killing 4,100 people and injuring about 7,000 people. The number of traffic accidents was 6.19 per cent lower than that of last year’s first half while the number of deaths and injuries dropping by 0.75 per cent and 11.44 per cent, respectively. Of the traffic accidents, nearly 8,900 happened on roads, 62 occurred on railways and about 40 were reported on waterways. Chairman of the committee Khuất Việt Hùng said that 35 out of 93 cities and provinces had fewer traffic accidents than during last year’s first half. The accidents took place on Highway No 20 running through Đức Trọng District in the Central Highlands province of Lâm Đồng. At some 7.30am, a truck carrying fertilisers, which was going from Đà Lạt City to Bảo Lộc City in Lâm Đồng Province, collided with a motorbike and injured two persons. The truck driver continued to drive and crashed into a smaller truck and four motorbikes, crushing them. It also hit two other cars parked in the yard of a house by the road. A total of 378 people were killed and more than 3,570 others injured in 3,418 road accidents during the five-day holiday, reported the Road Safety Centre (RSC) of Thailand. On April 15 alone, some 552 road accidents occurred, claiming 69 lives and injuring 589 others, 42 percent of which were caused by drink driving. Thai authorities said about 22,000 people were tested for alcohol use at checkpoints nationwide between April 11 and 15. Some 7,000 drink drivers were taken into custody while more than 10,000 motorcycles and cars were seized. Six people were sent to hospital on Tuesday following two separate accidents on the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay Expressway. he accidents occurred on the last day of the four-day national holiday that began on Saturday, when salaried workers visiting their hometowns flocked back to the southern metropolis on Wednesday. The first accident occurred between three vehicles at around 11:20 am on a stretch of the expressway that passes through Long Thanh District in Dong Nai Province, according to Vietnam Expressway Services Engineering (VEC E).
