7-year-old boy, Vietnam’s youngest heart transplant recipient, goes home

March 4, 2021 by e.vnexpress.net

He is the youngest patient ever that has gone through such an operation in Vietnam. A month after the surgery, his condition has stabilized and he could walk and play normally.

However, doctors at the Vietnam-Germany Friendship Hospital, where the operation was done, reminded the family not to let the boy engage in too much physical activity or get emotional.

The boy suffered rom cardiomyopathy, a disease of the heart muscle that makes it hard for the heart to pump blood to the rest of the body, and was at the final stage of heart failure.

The condition forced him to take in high doses of cardiotonic drug regularly. It left him weak and thin, weighing just 16 kilos (35 pounds).

Doctors diagnosed that a heart transplant was the only way to save him. Fortunately, the family of a young man who was brain dead after a traffic accident made the call to donate his heart.

With all indicators of the donor and recipient matching, the hospital decided to give transplant priority to the boy, given his young age and very critical condition. Four days after the operation, the boy was able to get up, play, recognize all people and eat and drink on his own.

“This huge favor, me and my boy would never ever forget,” his mother said.

Nguyen Huu Uoc, director of the Cardiovascular and Thoracic Center at the hospital, said the country receives very few organ donations from brain-dead patients each year and the chance to find a suitable heart to transplant for a child patient was almost zero.

“And therefore when such a miracle happens and a life is saved, there is no bigger happiness for us doctors.”

Vietnam’s 2020 GDP growth predicted to slow to 7-year low

February 12, 2020 by hanoitimes.vn

The Hanoitimes – Vietnam would be among four economies hardest hit by the Covid-19 outbreak, behind Singapore, Thailand and Hong Kong (China).

The Ministry of Planning and Investment (MPI) has forecast Vietnam’s GDP growth to slow to a 7-year low of 5.96% in 2020, indicating a less optimistic outlook compared to its assessment one week ago, local media reported.

Data: MPI. Chart: Ngoc Thuy.

Previously, the MPI predicted Vietnam’s GDP in 2020 to grow 6.09% in case the Covid-19 (nCoV) is contained by the end of the second quarter, representing a 0.7 percentage points lower than the target set by the National Assembly and nearly one percentage point compared to 2019.

The MPI suggested Vietnam would be among four economies hardest hit by the Covid-19 outbreak, behind Singapore, Thailand and Hong Kong (China).

The latest prediction of the MPI is similar to those of domestic economists.

Pham The Anh, chief economist at the Vietnam Institute for Economic and Policy Research (VEPR), told VnExpress that Vietnam’s economic growth is predicted to be shaved off by one percentage point, while ANZ predicted a decrease of 0.8 percentage points in the first quarter due to the epidemic.

The MPI also estimated Chinese arrivals coming to Vietnam would decline by 2.3 million if the outbreak is controlled by the end of the second quarter, while those from other countries are likely to decrease between 50% and 60%.

“As Chinese tourists spend an average of US$743.6 each, and international tourists of US$1,141, a loss of US$5 billion would be incurred if the epidemic persists to the end of June,” said the MPI in its report.

Preliminary assessment from the Vietnam Tourism Advisory Board (TAB) said the damage in the first quarter could be up to US$7 billion and exceed US$15 billion until the end of the second quarter.

With tourism under pressure from the outbreak, the aviation industry is set to face a similar fate. Before the epidemic, 11 Chinese airlines conducted 240 flights per week to Vietnam, while Vietnam Airlines, Jetstar Pacific and Vietjet operated 72 flight routes to 48 destinations in China with 401 flights per week.

In addition to tourism and aviation, Vietnam’s agricultural sector with high dependence on the Chinese market is facing numerous difficulties.

KB Securities said as consumption in China shrinks due to the outbreak, Chinese imports of goods and products from other countries would be set to decline. Meanwhile, China is Vietnam’s main export market for agricultural products as its imports Vietnamese goods worth nearly US$6 billion, accounting for 35% of Vietnam’s total exports of agricultural products.

In 2019, Vietnam recorded a trade deficit of nearly US$34 billion from China, importing largely phone and electronic parts, and input materials for textile and footwear production. With heavy dependence on input materials from China, Vietnam’s manufacture is set to face a major impact from the outbreak.

A survey conducted by the National Private Economic Development Research Board revealed many enterprises could maintain operation for one more week before running out of input materials.

Cash injection not an answer

Vietnam, however, is not the only country facing pessimistic outlook amid the outbreak of the Covid-19. On the global stage, many countries are using stimulus packages to mitigate the negative impacts. China has rolled out a US$174-billion bailout package, comprised of US$22-billion injection into Chinese markets to prevent the country’s stocks and currency from falling. Other countries also took a slew of measures to shore up their financial markets.

VEPR expert Pham The Anh said in case of Vietnam, monetary easing would not be feasible due to differences in the structure of economic growth.

A stimulus package would not boost the number of Chinese tourists coming to Vietnam, produce more agricultural goods or provide sufficient input materials for local enterprises, Anh added.

In addition, monetary easing would put upward pressure on inflation, which has been on the rise since the end of 2019 due to African swine fever.

Instead of using monetary policy, Anh said Vietnam should find ways to diversify revenues and pursue a more sustainable economic growth model.

Another solution is to waive visa for tourists from European countries and other important markets such as New Zealand, Canada, to relieve pressure from a decline in the number of Chinese tourists.

As many enterprises are facing difficulties, there should be more supports from the banking system and tax reduction for the business community.

Hanoi (VNA) – Hoa Phat Group plans to import 1.44 billion USD worth of commodities from Australia in 2021, more than doubling last year’s figure.

The imports will include around 4 million tonnes of iron ore, 3.5 million tonnes of coal of different types and 145,000 cows.

The group’s imports of machines, equipment, and materials for production reportedly hit nearly 2 billion USD last year. Of the total, some 35 percent, or 700 million USD, came from Australia , also over double the figure from 2019 and making the industrial manufacturer the largest Vietnamese client of the country.

More than half of the total import value, or 364 million USD, came from coal, compared to just 115 million USD in 2019.

The group’s purchases of iron ore leapt a whopping 19-times to 123 million USD in the first eleven months of 2020.

Hoa Phat bought more coal and iron ore last year to serve production at its iron and steel integrated complexes in the northern province of Hai Duong and the central province of Quang Ngai’s Dung Quat Economic Zone.

Meanwhile, it annually purchases hundreds of thousands of cows from Australia, with its herd accounting for 50 percent of all Australian-imported cows in Vietnam .

With such soaring import numbers, Hoa Phat was estimated to account for 17 percent of Australia’s total export value to Vietnam in 2020, compared to 7.4 percent in 2018 and 7.6 percent in 2019.

According to Global Trade Atlas, Australia’s exports to Vietnam reached 4.4 billion USD in 2020, 16 percent of which was imported by Hoa Phat.

Last year, the group’s exports exceeded 1 billion USD, including 966 million USD worth of high-quality and construction steel./.

Three main trends for Vietnam’s e-commerce in 2021

March 3, 2021 by vietnamnet.vn

Innovation in Vietnam’s e-commerce industry this year will focus primarily on payments, logistics, and digital technology.

In 2020, major online shopping platforms in Vietnam added games and livestream services.

Tran Tuan Anh, managing director at Shopee Vietnam, said during the time of social distancing, Vietnamese consumers began to switch to online platforms for both essential goods and entertainment purposes.

E-commerce applications, therefore, must integrate many interactive elements such as games and livestream to increase connections with users.

In 2021, Shopee predicts three main development trends in the e-commerce industry, including the development of digital payments, logistic services, and changing of selling methods.

As noted by Shopee, the total number of orders paid through Airpay e-wallet across Southeast Asia grew by four times. In particular, the strongest growth rate was for buyers over 50 years old, which demonstrates the easy accessibility of Airpay wallet.

As the government is moving towards a cashless society, epidemics have become a driving force behind this process in some areas where most consumer transactions are done in cash.

In addition to increasing wallet usage in online shopping, traditional stores are also accepting more payments via e-wallets. The number of stores in Vietnam using AirPay wallet payments doubled in 2020.

In the year 2021, Shopee said, consumers expect more efficient deliveries. Businesses and sellers need to use technology effectively to ensure that goods are delivered quickly and at cost savings. To do this, it is necessary to monitor the entire process from moderation to delivery, including improvement of logistics networks and warehouse capacity.

In 2020, many businesses transported goods from warehouses at a rate that was three times higher.

In Vietnam, goods related to food, health and home transported from Shopee’s warehouse doubled last year.

Delivery is the key to many online shopping platforms so it is incorporated into Tiki’s development strategy in 2021. Chief Financial Officer at Tiki Richard Trieu Pham said that Tiki has invested tens of millions of US dollars in technology and logistics systems each year, and will continue to increase in the future.

Technology and the end-to-end supply chain at Tiki help ensure the shortest order and delivery times at the lowest cost, thanks to the reduction of intermediary steps and optimization of the use of raw materials and identification of the fastest route.

In 2020, Tiki recorded a reduction of more than 25% in logistics costs per order and a return rate of less than 1%.

The Covid-19 pandemic has prompted businesses, from high-end brands to small businesses, to promote online businesses. This has led to the third trend where businesses and sellers have had to adopt an innovative digital strategy to reach customers in the context of social distancing.

For example, last year Shopee combined with Pond to integrate AI into shopping consulting and skin care consulting for customers.

According to the Department of E-Commerce and Digital Economy under the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Vietnam’s e-commerce in 2020 increased by 18% – the highest level in the region.

Market size reached $11.8 billion, accounting for about 5.5% of total retail sales of consumer goods and services nationwide.

Vietnam was also the only country in Southeast Asia with double-digit e-commerce growth rate last year. Although the number of transactions increased over the same period, due to the epidemic, people mainly bought low-value goods, leading to a decrease in revenue.

A day in the life of a blacksmith

December 29, 2020 by hanoitimes.vn

The Hanoitimes – Nowadays, in a modern world, many traditional crafts have disappeared but still remained artisans who are trying to keep the tradition in every corner of Hanoi’s Old Quarter, helping ensure that the past is not forgotten but preserved as evidence of a city with history of thousands of years.

Once known as the street specialized in supplying high quality metal forging utensils in Hanoi, Lo Ren street (Street of the Blacksmith) now has only one workshop that keeps furnace burning.

The best shopping places in Hanoi’s Old Quarter can be found along narrow alleyways close to Hoan Kiem lake, where you can find retailers that have managed to retain their particular trades for generations.

In the memories of Hanoians, the Old Quarter is not only the representation of Hanoi’s cultural values, but also the concentration of many old trades that were once part of the routine in the capital city.

Nowadays, in a modern world, many tradition crafts have disappeared but there remain artisans who are trying to keep the tradition going in every corner of the Old Quarter, which helps ensure that the past is not forgotten but preserved as evidence of a city with history of thousands of years.

Located on the corner of Hang Dong – Lo Ren street, Hoan Kiem district, a 60-year-old blacksmith is still hammering metal in front of a fiery furnace which lights a street corner.

This is Mr. Nguyen Van Hung, who is preserving the metal-smith tradition left by his father.

Blacksmithing is the craft of working with soot, grease and heavy hammers.

Mr. Hung said that this shop was passed on to his father by his grandfather and now it is his turn to take over.

”My grandfather moved from Nam Tu Liem district to settle down in Lo Ren street with his profession,” said Mr. Hung.

He added that his family’s shop was located down the street for only a few hundred meters but there were dozens of blacksmith shops. In its heyday, Lo Ren street was lit up and kept warm by the flame all year round and noisy with the harsh sound of the hammer.

In sunny or rainy weather, the fire is always burning. Currently, the item he usually makes is tools for concrete chisels.

The most important items of blacksmithing are anvils and hammers.

Especially, Mr. Hung is the only blacksmith left in the street.

”I remain forging not only for earning a living, I want to “keep the fire” for the whole street of Lo Ren. I will be practicing the profession to the last breath. I am proud of that, although this profession is so hard. But most importantly, I myself can live on it with my own passion,” Mr. Hung said.

Products made by Mr. Hung every day.

Over the years, Mr. Hung has not found a disciple who is dedicated to pass on his valuable experiences.

”There are also many people who want to learn the job, but they give up after only a few days. Now that I’m 60 years old, I can’t be doing the job any longer. By the time I stop hammering, blacksmith would remain just… the name of a street ” said Mr. Hung.

Sexual assaults against foreigners have been ongoing for a long time, say victims

March 4, 2021 by vov.vn

Sexual assaults in Tay Ho district, an area popular with people of all nationalities to live and work, o Tay districthave been hidden for many years until they recently surfaced on social media. Several foreign women have since claimed that years ago they were assaulted by Vietnamese assailants riding motorcycles on roads around the area.

Sarah van der Velden, a 45-year-old lawyer from the United States, described how similar cases have happened to her friends during her 15-year stay in Tay Ho. She told zingnews.vn that it is rare for such sexual assaults to be reported and shared in public as they are being done at present.

Van der Velden herself is also a victim of sexual harassment. She recalled that she had twice been sexually harassed by motorcycle drivers during her stay in the West Lake area of Tay Ho district.

In 2011, van der Velden was shocked when a Vietnamese male aged over 40 stopped his motorcycle and removed his trousers in front of her while she was having a stroll around the lake.

Seven years later, another Vietnamese man also in his 40s drove a motorbike from behind, patted her on the backside, then quickly rode off laughing. The incident occurred whilst she was jogging around the lake.

“I shouted at him right away, and felt furious for a long time,” said van der Velden, adding that similar cases had happened to every jogger she knew.

Recent reports regarding sexual assaults openly targeting foreign women have prompted a number of embassies of the US, the UK, Ireland, and France to warn their citizens about the possible risks of attacks in the West Lake area of Tay Ho district.

In a public statement, the British Embassy in Hanoi said:

“There has been a recent spike in reports of personal attacks, including rape & sexual assault, on foreign nationals in Hanoi. Some reports are of women being victims of indecent assault and harassment (including inappropriate touching and groping) particularly while walking alone.

We take any reports of rape and sexual assault seriously and treat them in complete confidence. British nationals can call us for support any time of day or night.”

In the wake of these sexual assaults, a Facebook group has been set up specifically for foreigners residing in Hanoi to share information, alert each other regarding new incidents, and have their say on the matter. After joining the Facebook group, some female foreigners living in the area said they felt scared whilst going out with their pets or they have since given up walking locally.

Lo May, a 30-year-old from the US, has previously been the victim of sexual violence in Hanoi. She told zingnews.vn that she was attacked in 2018 by two youngsters who drove from behind and grabbed her backside. When the incident occurred, she was taking a stroll alongside her boyfriend on Dang Thai Mai street in the West Lake area, with the pair unable to see the youngers as it was getting dark.

These days, May, a horse-riding instructor in Long Bien district, says she feels very cautious when out walking alone, particularly when noticing young people around.

Similarly, van der Velden states that she is now highly vigilant when jogging in the area. She always informs her family about the route she will take, does not wear earphones, is fully aware of her surroundings, and plans an escape in case of a possible attack before going out.

Police in Hanoi say they are handling cases of sexual assault recently reported by several foreign victims. Several days ago, they summoned a young man who was accused of carrying out violence against foreign women in Tay Ho district for interrogations. They also invited four foreign victims to the scene of the attacks in order to gather more information and evidence.

There is no doubt that the sexual attacks serve to tarnish the image of Hanoi as a city of peace, and the police are now working hard to crack down on these attacks in order to create a safe living environment for all people, including foreign nationals.
