New Zealand’s Auckland starts second COVID-19 lockdown this month

February 28, 2021 by tuoitrenews.vn

MELBOURNE — Exactly one year after New Zealand recorded its first coronavirus case, the country’s biggest city, Auckland, woke up on Sunday to a second lockdown this month as health authorities try to rein in a cluster of the more contagious UK variant.

The seven-day lockdown of the city of nearly 2 million, announced late Saturday by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, was prompted by the case of a person who had been infectious for a week but had not been in isolation.

“It is more than likely there will be additional cases in the community,” Ardern told a televised news conference, although there were no new cases recorded on Sunday.

The lockdown follows a three-day stay-at-home order in mid-February after a local emergence of the UK variant of the new coronavirus that causes COVID-19. There are now about 14 cases linked to the cluster.

“Despite our best efforts to date, recent cases have gone to work when they shouldn’t have,” Ardern said.

Judith Collins, leader of the opposition, called for tougher penalties against those not following public health advice around isolation. “No one wants to be yo-yoing in and out lockdown,” Collins said in a statement.

The new lockdown, with Level 3 restrictions, allows people to leave home only for essential shopping and essential work. Public venues will remain closed. Restrictions in the rest of the country will be tightened to Level 2, including limits on public gatherings.

The measures have complicated several high-visibility sporting events planned in Auckland.

The organisers of the America’s Cup yacht race said on Sunday the head-to-head final between Italy and New Zealand that was to start March 6 was postponed to at least March 10.

New Zealand’s fourth Twenty20 International cricket match against Australia has been shifted to Wellington where it will be played behind closed doors on Friday.

Some social media users from around the world expressed dismay at the strong response that would lock down a large city over a single case, with one Twitter user writing, “They are insane.”

However, swift public health measures often implemented in the past year, combined with aggressive contact tracing and border closure have been credited with making New Zealand highly successful in keeping the coronavirus pandemic from spreading.

New Zealand, with a population of 5 million, has recorded just over 2,000 coronavirus cases since the start of the pandemic and 26 deaths.

Vietnam may start human trial of Covid-19 vaccine this month

November 3, 2020 by hanoitimes.vn

The Hanoitimes – Vietnam currently has four Covid-19 vaccines under research by four companies.

Vietnamese scientists are expected to conduct human trials of a locally-made Covid-19 vaccine this month on a group of 60 volunteers, according to the health ministry.

The vaccine has been researched and produced by Nanogen Pharmaceutical Biotechnology Ltd. Co. (Nanogen), one of four companies in Vietnam that are studying Covid-19 vaccines. The company’s vaccine is expected to be the first to reach the stage of human trials.

The vaccine has been tested on animals and was also checked by the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology, said Nguyen Ngo Quang, deputy head of the Administration of Science, Technology and Training under the Ministry of Health.

The ministry is currently urging Nanogen to ready the vaccine for human trials right in November, Mr. Quang informed, adding that the ministry required strict compliance with regulations on ensuring safety for volunteers and ethical practices in biomedical research.

Some 187 companies around the world are developing Covid-19 vaccines, of which 38 are being tested on humans. Vietnam’s health ministry and scientists are hoping to have a commercially-viable Covid-19 vaccine in the fourth quarter of 2021.

Vietnam has also registered to receive priority access to a Covid-19 vaccine when it is available on the market.

Vietnam currently has four Covid-19 vaccines under research by Nanogen, Vabiotech, Polyvac and the Institute of Vaccines and Medical Biologicals (IVAC).

Another Vietnamese company, Hanoi-based Vaccine and Biological Production Company No. 1 (VABIOTECH), has also tested Covid-19 vaccines on rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta). Trials are expected to last around three months. Earlier, VABIOTECH tested Covid-19 vaccines on mice.

Vietnam has recorded 1,192 Covid-19 cases so far, of them 89 are still active. A total of 35 have succumbed to the disease, many being elderly patients with underlying conditions like diabetes or kidney failure. No community transmission has been recorded in two months.

Vietnam has first super-cold freezer for Covid-19 vaccines

February 22, 2021 by hanoitimes.vn

The Hanoitimes – Each freezer has a defrosting room with temperatures kept at minus 8 degrees Celsius to ensure vaccines are safely thawed prior to usage.

Vietnam’s Ministry of Heath has licensed three freezers in Hanoi, Danang and Ho Chi Minh City to simultaneously store three million doses of Covid-19 vaccines.

A representative of Vietnam Vaccine Joint Stock Company (VNVC), an importer of Covid-19 vaccines to Vietnam, said that VNVC was licensed in January to operate the three super cold facilities to store Covid-19 vaccines at temperatures from minus 86 to minus 46 degrees Celcius.

Each freezer has a defrosting room with temperatures kept at minus 8 degrees Celsius to ensure vaccines are safely thawed prior to usage, the representative added.

VNVC was also licensed by the Ministry of Health to operate 49 warehouses and two central repositories for keeping vaccines at temperatures ranging from 2 to 8 degrees Celcius.

All cold and ultra-cold storage facilities are equipped with high-tech on-site and remote temperature monitoring systems.

The health ministry last week approved the import of 204,000 doses of the Oxford/AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine this month to stem the spread of the coronavirus in Vietnam. It would mark the first batch of 30 million vaccine doses Vietnam had previously ordered from Swedish-British developers AstraZeneca and Oxford University.

Vietnam has four domestic Covid-19 vaccines developed by Nanogen Pharmaceutical Biotechnology Joint Stock Company, the Institute of Vaccines and Medical Biologicals, Vaccine and Biological Production Company No. 1 and the Center for Research and Production of Vaccines and Biologicals.

Vietnam has been making effort to handle the ongoing community Covid-19 infection that broke out in late January and since then has transmitted to 791 people in 13 cities and provinces. The country has so far had 2,383 cases, 627 of them active.

Second human trials of Covid-19 vaccine expected to start this month

January 5, 2021 by hanoitimes.vn

The Hanoitimes – If all three phases show good results, the second made-in-Vietnam Covid-19 vaccine will be available in the market as soon as late 2021.

The human trial of Vietnam’s second Covid-19 vaccine is expected to begin this month, which is two months earlier than planned.

The Institute of Vaccines and Medical Biologicals (IVAC), based in the souther province of Khanh Hoa, has requested the Ministry of Health’s permission for the human trials of its Covid-19 vaccine this month.

The IVAC said the request was made following the testing on animals like hamsters, mice, and rabbits, which has shown that the candidate vaccine is safe and creates high immune response.

If permitted, this will be the second Vietnamese vaccine in clinical trials on humans, after Nanocovax of the Nanogen Pharmaceutical Biotechnology JSC, which started the first phase of human trials in mid-December 2020.

IVAC Director Duong Huu Thai said the institute’s research on a Covi-19 vaccine began in May, aiming to successfully produce a vaccine and complete three phases of clinical trials in 18 months.

The first phase will begin in January and conclude in April. If all three phases show good results, the vaccine will be mass produced in late 2021.

“Initial results are relatively good,” Mr. Thai said, noting that the first phase of testing will last for about two months and finish in April.

During the first phase, 125 volunteers divided into three groups will receive different doses.

The volunteers must be healthy people aged from 18 to 59 and who are free from any underlying condition. They also need to meet several other requirements.

Each volunteer will receive two shots with a 28-day interval.

The IVAC is set to coordinate with the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology (NIHE) and the Hanoi Medical University to conduct clinical trials.

Apart from the IVAC’s vaccine and Nanocovax, Vietnam also has some other Covid-19 candidate vaccines in development.

Vietnam on December 4 recorded 1,497 Covid-19 cases and 1,339 recoveries. The number of deaths related to the disease is still kept at 35.

Vietnam may own Covid-19 vaccine by end of 2021: DPM

November 6, 2020 by hanoitimes.vn

The Hanoitimes – Of the four vaccine research companies in Vietnam, two are expected to conduct human trials of locally-made Covid-19 vaccines this month.

With the current progress, Vietnam is hopeful of owning a safe and effective domestically made Covid-19 vaccine by the end of 2021, Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam said at a National Assembly sitting on November 6.

Currently, four Vietnamese pharmaceuticals are researching anti-Covid-19 vaccines including Nanogen, Vabiotech, Polyvac and the Institute of Vaccines and Medical Biologicals (IVAC).

“Of the four vaccine research companies in Vietnam, two are expected to conduct human trials of locally-made Covid-19 vaccines this month,” said Mr. Dam.

Vietnam’s health ministry and scientists are hoping to have a commercially-viable Covid-19 vaccine in the fourth quarter of 2021.

There are more than 170 countries which are engaged in researching and testing anti-Covid-19 vaccines, Mr. Dam said.

Ninety two countries worldwide, including Vietnam, have joined an initiative by the World Health Organization and the Global Vaccine Alliance to guarantee rapid, fair and equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines for every one. However, no company has committed to selling the vaccines to this alliance, Mr. Dam informed.

He added that Vietnam is working with partners, including China and Russia, on vaccine manufacturing. It is not easy to buy Covid-19 vaccines because the demand far exceeds the production capacity. The government who wants to buy the vaccines must make a down payment.

Therefore, the deputy prime minister urged localities and individuals to remain vigilant, especially by closely monitoring illegal entry at border gates, as the looming winter-spring weather is conducive to the spread of the virus.

In addition, people must learn to live safely with the pandemic, Dam said, adding that leaders of ministries, localities and individuals must be on high alert to prevent Covid-19 by complying with all anti-pandemic protocols.

Vietnam has recorded 1,207 Covid-19 cases so far, of them 100 are still active. A total of 35 have succumbed to the disease, many being elderly patients with underlying conditions like diabetes or kidney failure. No community transmission has been recorded in more than two months.

The first batch of COVID-19 vaccine arrives in Vietnam

February 24, 2021 by www.vir.com.vn

the first batch of covid 19 vaccine arrives in vietnam
30 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine will be imported to Vietnam in the first half of 2021

After arriving at Tan Son Nhat International Airport, the batch will be stored in the dedicated cold storage system of Vietnam Vaccine JSC (VNVC) and AstraZeneca in Ho Chi Minh City.

The batch arrived in Vietnam earlier than originally expected in February. Therefore, the implementation plan for COVID-19 vaccination was also completed for March 2021.

The batch is among 30 million doses of AstraZeneca vaccine VNVC ordered in 2021. Other doses will be delivered to Vietnam in batches.

In addition, the COVAX global vaccine alliance will aid Vietnam with about 4.9 million doses of AstraZeneca vaccines in the first and second quarters, and 33 million more doses in the third quarter.

VNVC is in charge of importing this vaccine. It is also the only company eligible to be licensed by the Ministry of Health (MoH) to import vaccines, under the emergency anti-epidemic mechanism.

According to the plan of the MoH, the first batch of COVID-19 vaccine will be given to 11 priority groups, consisting of medical workers and staff participating in COVID-19 epidemic prevention and control.

“Human resources and facilities are readily prepared to serve up to 4 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine per month, as well as ensure safe injections”, Bui Kim Khanh, director of VNVC said.

After the arrival of the first batch of vaccines, VNVC will bring to Vietnam 30 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine of AstraZeneca in the first half of 2021.

Priority groups and people in the country will be officially vaccinated with high quality COVID-19 vaccine such as the ones used in Europe and many major countries in the world, contributing to controlling the panpidemic, and gradually restoring the economy.
