According to conservationists, there are only about five tigers recorded in the wild in Vietnam. However, individuals and businesses are seeing booming activities of tiger farming for non-commercial purposes, with the number of registered captive ones increasing year by year. A VND170-billion (USD7.32 million) hospital project in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue has been left idle because of its ineffective operations. Many households in Phu Loc District’s Loc Thuy District had to relocate 15 years ago for Chan May General Hospital. But it now sits abandoned covered by wild grass. The Hoang Quan and Century City real estate projects which sold well thanks to being located near Long Thanh International Airport remain largely unused. The two projects were implemented after Long Thanh International Airport in Dong Nai Province got the go-ahead. The five-hectare project which was built in 2010 has 21 semi-detached houses and 78 villas. Most of the houses have been sold. But a majority remain empty. During an event commemorating International Tiger Day on July 29, Natural Resources and Environment Minister Varawut Silpa-archa said the kingdom was praised by neighbouring countries at the 4th Asia Ministerial Conference on Tiger Conservation for its efficient wildlife conservation efforts. He added that the achievement in protecting these big cats was the result of the National Strategy for Tiger Conservation 2010-2022, which helped the nation have the highest number of wild tigers in Southeast Asia.
