Seminar highlights military’s safeguarding of maritime sovereignty and response to climate change

Vietnam expands international cooperation in maritime issues

Deputy Foreign Minister Le Hoai Trung (Photo: VNA) Hanoi (VNA) – The promulgation of Resolution 36-NQ/TW at the eighth session of the 12th Party Central Committee in October 2018 on the marine economic development strategy illustrates Vietnam’s broad strategic vision of turning the country into a strong maritime nation. In an article titled “Proactively enhancing and expanding external relations and international cooperation in maritime issues” published on Nhan dan (People) newspaper on January 11, Deputy Foreign Minister Le Hoai Trung said the resolution affirms Vietnam’s special attention to this matter. Trung, also head of the National Border Committee, said promoting foreign relations and cooperation in sea-related issues is one of the five major guidelines set in the resolution, aiming to build and maintain a peaceful, stable environment and legal order at sea as the basis for the safe and efficient use of maritime resources. Ninth ASEAN Maritime Forum opens in Da Nang

Participants in the 9th ASEAN Maritime Forum pose for a photo (Photo: VNA) Da Nang (VNA) - The 9th ASEAN Maritime Forum (AMF-9) opened in the central city of Da Nang on December 5, seeing the participation of more than 50 delegates from the 10 ASEAN countries and the ASEAN Secretariat. In his remarks at the opening ceremony, Vu Ho, Director of the ASEAN Department under the Vietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, affirmed that maritime security cooperation is always a high priority in ASEAN cooperation and in the partnership between ASEAN and its partners. He said currently, more than 10 ASEAN agencies are engaging in marine cooperation activities. Ninth ASEAN Maritime Forum gets underway in Danang

At the event (Photo: VNA) During his opening speech at AMF 9, Vu Ho, Director General of the ASEAN Department under Vietnam’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, affirmed that co-operation and maritime security will remain a top priority for the ASEAN bloc and its affiliates. At present, over 12 ASEAN agencies are actively involving in maritime co-operation events by ensuring a consistent level of maritime security and safety, carrying out search and rescue work, combating piracy, fighting illegally fishing, protecting the environment, as well as dealing with plastic waste. Trust, cooperation vital for marine security: Singaporean official

Minister for Trade and Industry of Singapore Chan Chun Sing speaks at the 6th International Maritime Security Conference (Photo: mindef.gov.sg) Singapore (VNA) – Building trust to encourage peace dialogues and compromise is key to dealing with complex marine security challenges which are threatening trade networks, said Minister for Trade and Industry of Singapore Chan Chun Sing. Chan made his statement while delivering the keynote address at the opening dinner of the sixth International Maritime Security Conference (IMSC) in Singapore on May 14. In his address, Chan mentioned challenges in piracy and terrorism, noting that an underestimation of an attack at chokepoints like the Panama or Suez Canals could be catastrophic and potentially cut off trade connections between major regions of the world.
