VNS Photo Thu Hằng HCM CITY — Localities and all links in the tourism value chain need to join hands to boost domestic tourism, which is now a priority for the struggling industry’s recovery post-pandemic, tourism experts have said. The sector has mapped out three scenarios for its recovery this year based on reopening the country to international visitors in June, September or December, Nguyễn Hữu Thọ, chairman of the Việt Nam Tourism Association, said. Whatever the scenario, the maximum number of international tourists expected is just 4.6 million while the number of domestic tourists expected is around 34 million, he told a recent meeting held in HCM City. Last year those numbers were 18 million and 82 million. For the time being, the country’s borders are firmly shut, and the industry is now focused on reopening to domestic tourism, Thọ said.
