Matt Millen is speaking from the heart. His new heart.
Millen, 60, the former NFL linebacker who won Super Bowls with the Raiders, 49ers and Washington, is recovering after a Christmas Eve heart transplant, according to NBC’s Peter King.
Apparently the new organ arrived just in the nick of time, as Millen’s original heart had been ravaged by the disease amyloidosis.
“When my doctor took out my heart, he saw how much it was damaged,” Millen told King. “It was awful. He said I must have tremendous reserve from training. That thing was so stiff and hard the doc didn’t know how it was still contracting to pump the blood.”
As you might expect for someone who just received the gift of life from a deceased donor, Millen has been doing some deep thinking.
“I have not been spared for nothing,” he told King. “I feel like I have more of a purpose now — I just have to find out what it is. I’ve got to figure out what my holy grail is for the rest of my life. I can’t waste this opportunity.”
Millen said the donor was a 26-year-old man who died of a drug overdose.
“I know I am lucky to be here,” he said.
