There are places in San Antonio people love because they’ve been here forever. And there are places people love for the food. You get both at Garcia’s Mexican Food.

The forever part, that one’s easy. Garcia’s was founded in 1962 by the late Julio Garcia and his wife, Yolanda. The food part, that one’s harder, because where do you start? Enchiladas, tacos, brisket, fideo?

I’ll start with one of San Antonio’s perfect plates, the No. 5 Mexican Dinner. It’s two cheese enchiladas under a blanket of brown chili gravy and melted American cheese with rice and beans.

People line up for the brisket here, too. They put it in tacos, on a barbecue sandwich, on nachos, on a plate of its own with guacamole salad. It’s a jack of all trades, and a master of all of them.

Garcia’s is a destination event for breakfast tacos, too.

For those reasons and more, I’ll hit Garcia’s when I’m off the clock. I will stand in line. I’ll order a No. 5 and a brisket taco. And I’ll hope forever lasts a little while longer.
