Why should doughnuts get to have all the fun? That’s the question I was left with after swinging by the new Churroholic on the city’s Southeast Side.
Fruity Pebbles, Oreo cookies, toffee crumbles — all these and more adorn freshly fried tubes of dough at this newcomer. It’s a format embraced by doughnut shops a decade ago, and one that works well with a confection held near-and-dear to the collective hearts of San Antonio.
And I have to say, Churroholic just might make an addict out of me. I’m sure we’ve all had that dense, leaden version of a churro that occasionally rears its ugly head in some area panaderías. Not so at Churroholic. The goods are fried to order and have all the delightful light bounce you could hope to find.

Take that dough and fry it into a pair of tight coils. Plop a scoop of ice cream — make mine horchata, but cookie, salted caramel and vanilla are also available — between the two. Then, because you can, roll that baby around in the cereal and candy toppings. Voila, now you have yourself an Instagram-worthy churro ice cream sandwich.
This isn’t the kind of ice cream sandwich you can eat with your hand, but it’s without question the kind of indulgent summer treat San Antonio can appreciate.
