— Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc joined talks with Governor General of Canada Julie Payette on Saturday morning (Vietnam time), as part of his visit to Canada and participation in the Group of Seven (G7) Outreach Summit from June 8 to 10.

— The central government and the National Assembly Standing Committee have agreed to delay the adoption of the draft law on special administrative-economic zones to have more time for research and completion.

Society

— The People’s Committee in the south-central province of Binh Thuan on Saturday requested the Power Generation Corporation 3 under the Vietnam Electricity and the management board of the Vinh Tan thermal power plant to deal with air pollution brought about by the facility’s operations.

— Fish were discovered dying en masse along the Phu Loc Canal in Thanh Khe District, located in the central city of Da Nang on Friday and Saturday. Competent authorities have collected samples to work out the cause.

— About 16 forest elephants divided into two herds have been damaging large areas of farms and plantations grown by residents in Thanh Son Commune, Dinh Quan District, located in the southern province of Dong Nai.

— An old tree along Hoai Thanh Street in District 8, Ho Chi Minh City, was uprooted and fell onto two houses on Saturday morning, damaging the residences and injuring a 13-year-old girl.

Business

— India’s NIVL sugar plant, operating in the southern province of Long An, has had to pay its debt worth about VND104 billion (US$4.5 million) to local sugarcane farmers with the company’s own sugar products due to persistent financial difficulties.

— The Ho Chi Minh City Labor Confederation on Saturday praised 24 businesses for striving to improve the working environment and provide good care to its workers and employees.

Lifestyle

— The fourth competition of the 2018 Da Nang International Fireworks Festival (DIFF 2018) held in the namesake city took place between Sweden and Portugal on Saturday night.

Sports

— A source close to Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper has revealed that the 2018 FIFA World Cup broadcasting package was sold to Vietnam Television (VTV) for less than $12 million. The state television is allowed to share its telecast rights with a third party in the country, but approval from FIFA is required.
