Bridge to Diamond Island opened to traffic today Le Anh An artist’s impression of a bridge leading to Diamond Island in HCMC’s District 2 – PHOTO: TL HCMC – A bridge that leads to Diamond Island in HCMC’s District 2 opened to traffic on May 30, which is expected to ease traffic congestion in the area, according to the municipal Department of Transport. The VND493 billion (US$22 million) project consists of a four-lane bridge over the Giong Ong To River with 291 meters in length and 22 meters in width, a 254-meter-long embankment and a 416-meter-long road along the Saigon River. The bridge is expected to make road traffic more convenient. Besides, it serves as an alternative route connecting the residential area in Thanh My Loi and the island, easing traffic congestion in My Thuy area, and contributing to urban development. Under directions of the municipal transport department, traffic will be altered after the bridge is opened. Specifically, vehicles will follow the itinerary: Saigon River Tunnel – Mai Chi Tho – D1 – the bridge – Bat Nan – Truong Van Ban – Phan Van Dang – Dong Van Cong – Nguyen Thi Dinh – Cat Lai ferry, and vice versa. Diamond Island is located in Binh Trung Tay Ward, District 2, covering around eight hectares, and bordered by the Saigon River and the Giong Ong To River.
