National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung visits China
National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung visited China from December 23-27, where he met Chinese President Xi Jinping, Chairman of the Chinese National People’s Congress, Chairman of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference Yu Zhengsheng as well as leaders of Hunan and Guangdong provinces.
The Vietnamese top legislator and Chinese leaders agreed to increase high-level meetings and visits as well as people-to-people exchanges for the interests of both countries, as well as for peace and development in the region and the world.
Key Vietnam-Cambodia border marker inaugurated
Vietnam and Cambodia jointly held a ceremony on December 26 morning in Duc Co district of the Central Highlands province of Gia Lai to inaugurate border marker No.30 and the road connecting both checkpoints of the Le Thanh-Oya Dav international border gate.
Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and his Cambodian counterpart Hun Sen attended the ceremony, marking their third time at such an event, and reflecting the two governments’ determination and efforts to enforce their reached treaties and agreements on territorial boundaries.
Party Central Committee wraps up 13th meeting
The 13th plenary meeting of the Party Central Committee wrapped up after eight days of sitting. The Central Committee decided to convene the 12th National Party Congress in Hanoi from January 20 – 28. The Central Committee also discussed and unanimously approved a list of personnel for the Politburo and Secretariat of the 12th tenure.
Vietnam’s economy expands by 6.68% in 2015, fastest pace in five years
Vietnam’s gross domestic product in 2015 was estimated to have risen by 6.68%, the highest growth rate in the 2011-2015 period, surpassing the target of 6.2%. Meanwhile inflation dropped to a 14-year low of 0.63%, significantly lower than the 5% target. The General Statistics Office said that this year’s growth was higher than 5.98% in 2014 and 5.42% in 2013, showing positive signs for the economy as macroeconomic stability was maintained and inflation was kept at the lowest level in the past decade.
Lai Chau hydropower plant starts generating electricity
Vietnam Electricity (EVN) on December 23 held a ceremony to celebrate Lai Chau hydropower plant’s first turbine becoming operational. Located in Nam Nhun district in the northern province of Lai Chau, the VND35.7 trillion (US$1.6 billion) hydropower project is the third on the Da River aiming to ensure electricity supply to the national electricity grid as well as controlling floods on the Northern Delta. The facility will supply over 4,600 million KWh of electricity to the national grid per year when all of its three of its turbines become operational in 2016.
PM vows continued favourable conditions for Google
Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung said the Vietnamese government would continue creating optimal conditions for the world’s major IT groups, including Google, to expand operations in the country while receiving the American technology company’s CEO Sundar Pichai. The Google executive expressed his hope that the company would have more opportunities to expand its operations in the Southeast Asian nation following the signing of the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement and the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) agreement to which Vietnam is a signatory.
Leaders extend greetings to Christians on the anniversary of Jesus’ birthday
President of the Vietnamese Fatherland Front Nguyen Thien Nhan extended his best wishes to Catholic and Protestant clergymen, dignitaries, monks and their followers nationwide on the occasion of Christmas 2015. During the week, Nhan and many other senior leaders made visits throughout the country to wish Catholics and Protestants a merry and peaceful Christmas and a happy New Year.
Vietnamese striker Nguyen Cong Phuong joins J2-League club on loan
Promising Vietnamese striker Nguyen Cong Phuong is joining Mito Hollyhock, a J2-League football club, on a one-year loan from a V-League representative, Hoang Anh Gia Lai, under a US$100,000 contract signed in Ho Chi Minh City on December 23. Accordingly, after returning from the 2016 AFC Championship finals along with Vietnam’s U-23 team in late January, Phuong will depart for Japan to join Mito in preparation for the 2016 season. The Nghe An-born striker will wear the no. 16 jersey at Mito and enjoy a monthly salary of about US$3,000, along with other bonuses.
