City to host ao dai festival next month

The People’s Committee of HCMC has assigned the municipal Department of Tourism to cooperate with the Vietnam Women Union in HCMC to host the 4th Ao dai Festival in HCMC in 2017, reports Sai Gon Giai Phong.
The city has lately encouraged local laborers and students to wear ao dai, which is Vietnam’s traditional long dress for women, one or two days a week to honor the beauty of women.
Tran Vinh Tuyen, vice chairman of the city, noted that the Department of Tourism must clarify the criteria and meaning of the event to honor the beauty of ao dai and to promote the beauty of women in the traditional costume as well as to appreciate local designers. Furthermore, the festival is aimed to rally support from the local community to help promote and preserve the culture of Vietnam via the images of ao dai.
It is expected that the event will take place from March 3 to 17 at different locations, including Nguyen Hue pedestrian square, the Youth Cultural House, the Gem Center, the General Library of HCMC, The War Remnants Museum, the Ao dai Museum, the Southern Women Museum and schools and offices and residential areas in the city.
The organizers of the festival will encourage local people to wear ao dai in March and to encourage local tailors and fabric shops and entertainment parks to give discounts for people who have purchase and wear ao dai during the festival.
The festival will feature some highlight events, including ao dai contest, photo contest, ao dai exhibition, art performance and ao dai parade. Moreover, there is a special exchange between representatives of foreign diplomatic corps in the city and local youth who wear ao dai to the event.
