Viettel and VNPT get 4G licenses Van Ly HCMC – Viettel and VNPT have become the first two carriers in Vietnam to get 4G licenses from the Ministry of Information and Communications. Mobifone, another major Vietnamese carrier, may receive a license to provide 4G service in the coming time. Meanwhile, FPT Telecom has had no word on whether it would test run 4G service or apply for a formal license. The ministry has allowed four major carriers — VNPT, Viettel, Mobifone and FPT Telecom — to provide the service on a trial basis. Viettel has piloted the service in Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province since late last year and later in Hanoi while VNPT’s VinaPhone began test running the service in HCMC and on Phu Quoc Island off mainland Kien Giang Province early this year. MobiFone has piloted the service in three big cities — Hanoi, Danang, and HCMC — since July this year. Viettel said the quality of 4G service is far better than that of 3G. With 4G, Viettel can provide high-definition video service at 720p in places where 4G is available. VNPT said the 4G connection speed equals to that of the fiber-optic Internet service.
