The banking sector will accompany Vietnamese fishermen, said Mr Nguyen Van Binh, Member of the Politburo, Governor of the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV), at the “The epic of the sea” programme held in the Quang Ngai Labour Culture House on March 7, 2016.
The programme was organised by the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV), the People’s Committee of Quang Ngai Province, and the Vietnam Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Industry and Trade (Vietinbank). It was aired live on VTV1 and VTV8 channels of the Vietnam Television.
In his opening keynote, Governor Nguyen Van Binh said “The Party and the State provide the best conditions with specific mechanisms and policies to support offshore fishermen, who in turn contribute to the Vietnam sea strategy and firmly safeguard the sovereignty of waters and islands.”
He also stated, “The banking sector will accompany fishermen, continue to supply credit for them to build modern large-capacity ships to sail farther, longer at sea to create wealth for themselves and for the country while strengthen entire people defence to firmly safeguard territorial integrity and territorial waters of the nation.”
The “Epic of the sea” programme comprises five reports and arts performances praising Vietnam’s Sea and Islands and the patriotism of fishermen’s generations were performed by the famous singers. Between repertoires, writer Chu Lai talked about contributions and sacrifices of women in fishermen’s families. At the art programme, organisers introduced to the audience reports with true stories of fishermen who survived super typhoon Chan Chu in 2006. They talked about their seafaring hardships together with simple dreams of having a communication device for every trip.
Understanding wishes of fishermen, the SBV asked commercial banks to actively provide credits for fishery development as stipulated in Decree 67/2014/ND-CP (Decree 67) and Decree 89/ND-CP amending and supplementing some articles of Decree 67. Credits from banks for fishermen have contributed to maritime economic development and territorial protection. After more than one year implementing Decree 67, commercial banks have lent nearly VND4 trillion to fishermen to upgrade nearly 400 large-capacity ships for offshore fishing and build 84 new fishing vessels.
Particularly, the banking sector has always provided practical assistances for fishermen, including social security activities in Quang Ngai province in particular and in central region in general. In the 2011-2015 period, the banking industry funded VND5,341 billion to fishermen in 28 coastal provinces across the country, including VND60 billion for fishermen in central region affected by natural disasters.
Also in this program, heads of steering committees 67 in 28 coastal provinces were granted symbolised machines for their role to supporting fishermen to build 735 ships worth nearly VND21 billion.
