Modern Jazz workshop with Dede Guardiola

Sun 24 Jan 2016, 4.30 – 7 pm

Kinergie Studio

7th Floor, 101A Nguyen Khuyen, Hanoi

Let’s explore Modern Jazz with French dancer Dede Guardiola.

Participants: Artists, dancers, students and everyone who are interested in creative movements and contemporary dance.

Jazz dance was the first street dance ever known. Dancers used to learn ballet or folkloric traditional dances. But dancers are artists, dance is creation, and these artists need to express themselves with their bodies, by the movement, feeling the music.

Modern jazz is just its evolution, using ballet techniques and contemporary music.

For this workshop, we will explore how to express ourselves; how to move in a breath, feel the music, follow a choreography, use the precision of technique, and enjoy creating altogether!

Born in Alsace, France, Dede discovered her passion for dancing at the age of 7 years old with Amanda Gary and Christelle Pinet. Dede started dancing by learning modern jazz, but she has been curious to discover new ways how to move and express with her body. She has tried everything she can: Ballet, belly dance, African dance, Afro jazz, claquettes, hip hop… At the age of 15 years old, she joined the Dream Dance company, hip hop choreographic, with which she won several times the title of French championship. At the age of 18, Dede left Alsace to go to study fashion design in Paris. She joined Rick Odums dance school for few years and later on, Mickaël Billioniere with who she danced hip hop before moving to Vietnam.

Artist Talk with Gabby Miller

Sat 23 Jan 2016, 4 pm

Nha San Collective

15th floor, Hanoi Creative City Building, 01 Luong Yen, Hanoi

Queer Forever! and Nhà Sàn Collective are pleased to invite you to the artist talk with Gabby Miller. The artist talk will close her exhibition “ĐI XUYÊN // CROSSING” in Hanoi.

In August 2015 Gabby Miller crossed The Pacific Ocean on The CMA CGM Gemini, a 380-meter long ship capable of carrying 11,000 containers. She was the only passenger going from Oakland to Xiamen, China. The trip took 21 days.

They steered through The Great Circle across The Arctic, through The Bering Sea, sucked up heavy crude oil for the ship in Russia. As they curved down to warmer parallels, lights began to hover on the horizon at dusk.

Aboard the ship and in the months following in Vietnam, she has been developing a new body of work that explores the geopolitical history, and current movement of goods, people and power across ocean lines. This project investigates the violence and power in the logistics of trade. The cargo ship plays an integral role as the vessel for departure for both refugees, and for goods, both historically and at present. In 1967 the U.S. government contracted Sea-Land Services to begin service from The Port of Oakland to South Vietnam. It is argued that the supply demands for Vietnam War catalyzed the adoption of container shipping globally.

“ĐI XUYÊN // CROSSING” includes some new paintings in heavy crude oil from the ship’s engine, photographs, video and sculptural work made during and after the crossing.

This exhibition includes a 30-minute video from 2010 with music composed by the late, great and beloved Nga Nhi.

Gabby Miller is an interdisciplinary artist based in San Francisco. As a visual artist and organizer, her creative practice investigates our contemporary existence within and across multiple locations. She has lived and practiced out of Vietnam, the birthplace of her mother, and The Bay Area, where she was born and raised. Often using her own body in her works, she is inventing a visual language through experiments merging sculpture, photography, performance and video to describe how we transport our habit patterns, history and iconic signifiers of identity across cultural boundaries in an age of globalization. The content of her work integrates a personal commitment to awareness of current political situations and the queer and alternative communities in The Bay Area and Southeast Asia that she is a part of.

Free entrance.

Workshop Dance/Movement Therapy with Autism

Thu 21 Jan 2016, 10.30 am – 12 pm

The Black Box

56 Nguyen Khuyen, Hanoi

Children with autism are described as living in their own world, for they often shun social contact. The classification of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) as a sickness, disease, or just a different way of being is still in question. Based on the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), poor social communication and restricted patterns of behavior and interests are two main diagnostics of ASD (DSM-5, 2013, p.50).

The workshop integrates the knowledge of the Kestenberg Movement Profile (KMP) and the research of children with autism at Heartsong organization where I have been working as a Dance/Movement Therapy intern. The workshop provides a brief overview of the research and intervention for children with autism spectrum disorders and how developmental and clinical perspectives of the Kestenberg Movement Profile (KMP) approach can bring benefit the clients.

Jazz Concert with Timo Vollbrecht & Band

Jazz Concert with Timo Vollbrecht

Hanoi: Fri 22 Jan 2016, 8 pm

Goethe-Institut Hanoi

56-58 Nguyen Thai Hoc, Ba Dinh, Hanoi

–

HCMC: Sat 23 Jan 2016, 8 pm

HCMC Conservatory of Music

112 Nguyen Du, Dist 1, HCMC

The Goethe-Institut presents the Southeast Asia tour of acclaimed jazz musician Timo Vollbrecht and his band FLY MAGIC. After the opening event in Hanoi, the musicians and their refreshingly different style of music will travel further to HCMC, Phnom Penh and Bangkok. The distinct and warm sound of band leader Timo Vollbrecht’s saxophone is inspired by the music scenes of Berlin and New York – the cities between which he commutes. Every song creates a new universe for itself – jazz elements merge with post rock, minimalism, new music and contemporary song culture.

FLY MAGIC consists of Timo Vollbrecht (saxophone), his long-time musical companion Keisuke Matsuno (guitar), Sebastian Merk (drums) and Matthias Pichler (bass). The band has been playing shows all over the world, in New York’s most famous jazz club, and at festivals in Panama, Haiti, Australia and Europe.

In Hanoi, the second part of the concert will be played together with saxophonist Nguyen Bao Long and the ensemble JumpforJazz. Band leader Long initiated this music project in order to establish and promote jazz music in Vietnam. You can expect a magical mix of energy, melancholy and urban pulse!

Timo Vollbrecht (30) studied at the Jazz Institute of the Berlin University of the Arts, and saxophone and composition at the New York University. The young musician is considered one of the most important voices of German jazz, and has already won several prizes. Timo Vollbrecht has been performing with internationally known Joe Lovano, Randy Brecker, and pop star Robbie Williams. He is also a lecturer and professor at the NYU.

Nguyen Bao Long is Vietnam’s best-known jazz saxophonist, and has been an important influence in the Hanoi jazz scene for almost 20 years. Next to that, he also works as a music teacher, organizes jazz events and plays in renowned orchestras. In 2013, he founded the band JumpforJazz, to support aspiring jazz musicians.

Opening: Fri 22 Jan 2016, 6 pm

Exhibition: 22 Jan – 29 Feb 2016, 8.30 am – 5.30 pm (except Sunday)

VinGallery

6 Lê Văn Miến, Thảo Điền, District 2, HCMC

Come to ‘Passers By’ a solo exhibition of new watercolour paintings by Vietnamese artist Ho Hung.

Ho Hung’s watercolours capture the ephemerality and the subtle sensuousness of the everyday. Dappled light, warm colours and empty spaces characterize his style and his view onto the landscape of his homeland of Southern Vietnam.

Travelling from place to place and painting on the streets, Hung records people passing by and is himself a stranger and a passerby to his subjects.

The fragility of these encounters surfaces in the free flowing and unpredictable quality of the watercolour. Similarly his views of Old Saigon and its weathered buildings remind us that everything is temporary and life itself is just passing by.

A technically skilled painter, Ho Hung has exhibited in multiple exhibitions across the country including solo exhibitions at Hue Fine Arts University and at the Fine Arts University HCMC. He is continuously gaining acclaim and notoriety for his work.

You are invited to participate in a rare multidisciplinary workshop and performance opportunity with Canadian composer/improviser Sandro Manzon.

You will also be invited to give a concert/performance of the things we learn and prepare throughout the workshop as the Hanoi Improvisers Orchestra.

What you need/What you don’t need:

1. Bring your instrument and be ready to play!

4. Understanding English is preferred but not essential.

5. Proficiency on an instrument (or in another discipline of your choice) is preferred but not essential.

6. Interest in experimental music/art is probably a good thing.

Music Night with Lydmor from Denmark

Wed 20 Jan 2016, 8 pm

ATK

73a Mai Hac De, Hanoi

Enchanting pop songstress with a knack for turning audiences into induced trances, LYDMOR, from Copenhagen, brings her Scandinavian style to a special Wednesday night performance.

Behind the curious and quite self-ironic name Lydmor (Danish for “Mother of Sound”), you find the 25-year old, Danish singer, songwriter and producer Jenny Rossander.

Despite of her young age, Lydmor has experienced more than most musicians ever will. She have toured most of mainland Europe and southeast Asia on her own, been on “trust tours” all across the European continent, where she performed, lived and slept in the homes of her fans, collaborated with renowned artists such as Arsenal (BE), Alle Farben(DE), Amanda Palmer (US), Bottled in England (DK), etc… and finally established herself as one of the most promising underground artists in her native Denmark.

Now Lydmor is ready to launch her solo career onto a whole new level. Fearlessly the young Dane exposes all of herself in the quest of achieving true artistic integrity, and with the release of her new album “y”, Lydmor has done just that. Stacked with intensity, emotion and personal experience, the album portrays a woman far beyond her age telling stories of love, intoxication and deprivation with Lydmor’s fragile and yet breathtaking voice, on top of an ambient and oddly catchy, electronic soundscape.

Lydmor is truly one of a kind, but to really appreciate her uniqueness, you have to hear it for yourself. Welcome to the Lydmor experience!

7 Nguyen Tat Thanh, D.4, HCMC

Come to a show with Denmark’s most hotly-tipped artist for 2016, Lydmor.

Behind the curious and quite self-ironic name Lydmor (Danish for “Mother of Sound”), you find the 25-year old, Danish singer, songwriter and producer Jenny Rossander.

Despite of her young age, Lydmor has experienced more than most musicians ever will. She have toured most of mainland Europe and southeast Asia on her own, been on “trust tours” all across the European continent, where she performed, lived and slept in the homes of her fans, collaborated with renowned artists such as Arsenal (BE), Alle Farben (DE), Amanda Palmer (US), Bottled in England (DK), etc… and finally established herself as one of the most promising underground artists in her native Denmark.

Lydmor is performing in Hanoi on 20 Jan. She has also performed in Hanoi in 2014.

Ballet Classes for Young Dancers

Dance embodies one of our most primal relationships to the universe. It is pre-verbal, beginning before words can be formed. It is innate in children before they possess command over language and is evoked when thoughts or emotions are too powerful for words to contain.

Dance is a natural method for learning and a basic form of cultural expression. Dance is fun, improves physical mobility, stimulates the brain, and is used to express feelings and thoughts. It is essential that education provides our children with the developmental benefits and unique learning opportunities that come from organizing movement into the aesthetic experience of dance.

Dance is my life-long passion and as a dance educator I would like to share my passion with children through teaching ballet and creative dance classes. Classes will be offered at Zenith Hanoi for different age groups.

* Baby ballet / creative dance for 2-3 year olds, mostly based on Brain Dance developed by Anne Green-Gilbert, infused with the first basic principles of ballet

* Pre-Primary ballet for 4-5 year olds, following the RAD (Royal Academy of Dance) curriculum and infused with some creative dance to keep it light and fun

* Primary ballet for 5-6 year olds, following the RAD curriculum

* Grade 1 ballet for 7-9 year olds, again following the RAD curriculum

His life is reduced to a daily routine of playing the grand piano in the lounge and attending his aunts’ dance class, where he is an accompanist. Isolated from the outside world, Paul has grown old without ever having lived… Until the day that he encounters Madame Proust, his neighbor on the fourth floor.
