Top 10 Things For Kids to Do in Tralee, Ireland

October 29, 2008 by ezinearticles.com

(1) Toby World, Mileheight Retail Park, Tralee…

The children will have an absolute ball during their 2 hours of playtime at Toby World. On site there are 3 play frames, spiral slides, 4-lane Astra slide, indoor sport court and a special Toddler Area for under 4’s. But that’s not all, also on site is a Special Needs Sensory Room, Kiddies Disco, Ceramics Room and Quazar Zone. There’s a Go-Kart area where the kids can make believe they are at Mondello Park. This area is extremely busy and normally there are only 4 cars up and running. Children have to queue and there is an extra charge for this part of the attraction.

Facilities include an café on site, which serves light meals and refreshments, so moms and dads take it easy and relax, the kids are having the time of their life!

(2) Tralee Town Park…

Tralee Town Park is situated in the heart of the town and is a great place to bring the children. It’s hard to believe that you are right in the middle of Tralee town as the peace and quiet is unbelievable. To start off why not get the kids to do a nature walk around the park. This is quite a nice little walk and can be fun picking out the different trees. Children love the Garden of Senses, with its sculptures and fabulous plants. Then depending on the time of the year you visit, there is the most gorgeous smell of roses in bloom. A new fountain has replaced the two old fountains in the park and the children’s play area has been relocated with lots of new play equipment installed.

(3) Kerry County Museum…

The museum is housed in the Ashe Memorial Hall in Tralee town centre. The museum consists of a Special Exhibition Gallery – “William Melville: Spymaster”, is currently running there. The Audio Visual room screens a 10 minute film of our spectacular Kerry landscape, then it’s on to the Museum Gallery, which takes you from 8000 B.C. to 1949. Next up is the Tom Crean room. Here you can learn about Annascaul’s famous son and his involvement in The Antarctica Expeditions. The Knights Hall prepares you for the last part of the attraction, The Medieval Experience, giving visitors an insight into what life was like in the area in 1450.

(4) Tralee Omniplex…

Not being too far from the coast, one thing we can’t bank on is the weather and sure enough over the last couple of months we have had more than our fair share of rain. This is where the cinema can come in very handy in keeping the kids happy for a couple of hours. Tralee Omniplex on Dan Spring Road is a relatively new 8 screen cinema and will be a welcome refuge from those rain clouds.

(5) The Dingle Way…

You can gain access to the Dingle Way from either Tonevane or Curraheen. If you choose the Tonevane access you can have a quick half hour walk on the Mountain Path, this takes you in a complete circle at Tonevane. Or if you are energetic you can take the route over to Curraheen.

The route from Tonevane to Curraheen will take approximately 1 hour. At Curraheen, there’s a pond complete with tadpoles, lilypads and the most beautiful coloured dragonflies. Here you’ll see remains of the old waterworks as well. Now the path from Curraheen onwards is a tougher hike so it might be wiser to stick to the Tonevane/Curraheen side and you’ll give your kids a wonderful experience of being on the mountains without a great degree of difficulty. You can just see the adventures, crossing little streams, seeing sheep and cows on farms below, or just sitting on the huge rocks admiring the view.

(6) Greyhound Racing…

Sometimes it’s nice to do an evening activity with the kids and what a great night’s entertainment there is to be had at the local greyhound racing track. Racing is held twice a week at Tralee Track and normally starts about 8pm. It’s best to arrive early, to ensure you get a good seat, and if you haven’t eaten, you can avail of the take-away downstairs or perhaps ‘push the boat out’ and have a sit down meal (pre-booking necessary for the restaurant). Then let the fun begin! You just can’t describe the excitement once the racing starts; people are jumping out of their seats cheering on their dog.

(7) Blennerville Windmill…

Blennerville village is located about 2 miles outside Tralee on the way to Dingle. Here you’ll find Blennerville Windmill. It’s a working windmill, which you can climb to the top of, and the views from here are spectacular to say the least. Be careful on the stairs though, especially on the way down as they are quite steep. You may be lucky and visit on a day when the sails are moving and you can easily pass a couple of hours here. Facilities include an audio-visual presentation, exhibition gallery, gift shop and restaurant. Please ensure you take some time to have a look at the Emigration Display, which shows Blennerville’s role as a main port.

(8) Fenit Park…

The village of Fenit is approximately 10km from Tralee. It’s a great spot to take the kids and here are a few reasons why. Fenit Park is a fabulous children’s play area with the usual assortment of swings, bouncy animals, hammocks, climbing nets and a replica wooden steam train, basically you can’t go wrong here. And being just alongside the sea the kids are getting all that wonderful fresh sea air in their lungs.

Now on the off chance that they might be bored you can all go on a nice walk along the path as far as the swimming changing rooms. The path ends here but if the kids are feeling energetic, and no doubt they probably are, by just walking on a few yards you’ll come to the other side of the beach where you can walk quite a stretch. In the distance keep an eye out for Fenit Lighthouse. No doubt those sharp little eyes will have spotted what looks like a very tall man standing on top of a hill off to the left, and again no doubt they will like to have a close up view of what it really is. This is St. Brendan the Navigator Heritage Park and you can climb to the top to see the statue up close. The area is fenced so it’s quite safe to bring the kids up there.

(9) Tralee Sports and Leisure Centre…

With a 25mtr pool and kiddie’s pool, this will keep the whole family happy. Kids like nothing better than splashing about and this is a great suggestion for our typical Kerry rainy day.

The facility has squash/racquetball courts, a fitness suite and sports hall.

(10) The Aquadome…

You can have hours of fun at Tralee’s top attraction – Tralee Aquadome. It’s home to the lazy river, a whirlpool bath, mushroom fountain, water slides and much more. Normally your time in the water is unlimited, however, if the facility is very busy, you will be limited to 2 hours. But even at that what a fun 2 hours it will be. The kids are sure to be talking about their Aquadome adventure for some time as they remember the river rapids and outdoor rapids, water cannons and sprays.

Moms and Dads can also avail of the on-site Health Suite. Facilities here include a water message bed, steam room, sauna, plunge pool, and sun shower.

Now after all that activity, you’ll probably hear a chorus of “I’m starving”! Look no further than Zest Café, an outlet serving snacks and refreshments.

Just alongside the Aquadome is Aquagolf. This is a mini golf course and is a complete hoot, because lets face it, at the end of the day we all think we can control a golf club, just like Tiger Woods (not!). It’s an 18 hole course but when the ball is not going the direction you want it to the course may as well be double that. Each hole has a different degree of difficulty and the lengths also vary.

Please note: restrictions apply to the Aquadome. It’s advisable to check their website or phone in advance, as the last thing you need is disappointed children due to non-compliance to rules and regs.
