Veteran composer’s symphonies performed (10-06-2005) A concert premiering a new symphony by veteran composer Hoang Van will be held in Ha Noi tonight. Three of Van’s symphonies – Dien Bien Phu symphony that features a chorus, symphony No 1 The Fatherland’s Bulwark and a violin concerto entitled The Youth and Love – will be performed during the concert. The 75-year-old composer took more than 10 years to complete the four-chapter symphony Dien Bien Phu that will premiere at the concert. It is his most personal work to date. “I have invested a lot of time and put all my mind into this work. It isn’t easy to create a symphony, which not only expresses the magnanimous harmony of the great victory but also meets the audiences’ entertainment requirements,” he said. “Both new musical language and artistic references are presented to the audience. They are aligned with the significance of the great historical victory at Dien Bien Phu,” he added. The Dien Bien Phu Campaign led Hoang Van to pursue a career in music. As a soldier who took part in the campaign, he wrote some songs, for which, thanks to Ho Keo Phao (The Cannon Tugging Chantey), he was given an Army Exploits Order.
