Vietnam’s record artificial pine trees lit up for Christmas

Two man-made pine trees, which measure around 40 meters in height are sparkling for Christmas in central and southern Vietnam. One of them has been recognized as the country’s tallest artificial tree. The first tree is 41 meters tall, the height of a 10-storey building, and was built at Trai Gao Diocese in central Nghe An Province’s Nghi Loc District. According to Nguyen Van Tri, head of My Yen Congregation, it took around a month to make preparations for the construction of the tree. Thirty people worked day and night to erect the tree in three weeks, and it was not ready for show time until December 21. The tree, which is 13 meters wide at its base, features 12 layers in a pyramid shape. Wrapped around a sturdy steel frame are more than five tons of iron, 15,000 plastic pine leaves, 2,000 twinkling lights, and 500 decorative bulbs.  Seven die in boat accident in Binh Phuoc ProvinceSearching for the victims.Local border police and related agencies on October 24 were still searching for the remaining survivor of a motorboat accident that occurred on October 23 in the southern province of Binh Phuoc, while bodies of six passengers had been recovered.According to initial information, 40 local residents of Loc An Commune of Loc Ninh District in Binh Phuoc Province left their hometown for Cambodia for business.The boat was carrying 40 workers who returned after one day working along the Mang River, but the motorboat overturned when it was about 50 meters from the riverbank.The accident was allegedly caused by the deteriorated condition of the boat and the river's raging torrent. The Ho Chi Minh City People's Court on September 25 sentenced three members of a drug trafficking ring to death.

Three transnational drug traffickers face death penalty Following a three-day trial, Nguyen Van Binh, born in 1970, from Ba Ria-Vung Tau province, Le Hoang Hoi (1954, An Giang province) and Tran Dinh Tam (1971, Ho Chi Minh City) were given the death sentence. Four others of the ring Nguyen Tan Duy (1972, Quang Nam province), Nguyen Thi Ngoc Nga (1976, Ca Mau), Truong Quoc Thang (1974, Ho Chi Minh City) and Duong Ngoc Canh (1985, Dong Nai) received the life imprisonment sentence, while eight others were sentenced to from more than 3 years to 30 years behind bars. According to the indictment, the accused together formed a trans-national drug trafficking ring. Some also smuggled military weapons from Cambodia to sell in Vietnam. Obesity rates among urban students double in decade

The obesity rate among elementary school students in Ho Chi Minh City has doubled to 38.5 percent in the past decade, according to a survey recently released by the local Nutrition Center. More and more elementary school students are getting obese, a survey says. Photo: Tuoi Tre Sixty percent of those obese students were diagnosed with high cholesterol levels, the survey indicates. Overfeeding by their parents and physical inactivity on the students' part have been identified as the two main reasons for the surge, says the survey which was conducted at 15 elementary schools in the 2009-2010 academic year. Students are now overfed and have to study so much that they do not have time for extra-curricular activities, according to Nguyen Van Tri, principal of Vo Truong Toan Elementary School in District 10.
