Crackdown on smugglers creates border control turmoil A crackdown on smugglers has created turmoil at Vietnam-China border crossings, notably at Mong Cai Border Gate in Quang Ninh Province, which is being flooded with people going back and forth between the two countries as gangs probe for weak spots in border control. Officials said Mong Cai Border Gate processed 10,000 people on December 6. The crowdness has been going on over the past month following the arrest of a smuggling gang on November 2, which prompted an increase of inspections by border gate security along the border. Mong Cai has been reinforcing security and inspection of the imported goods to identify smugglers, with all adjacent road crossings blocked to force people through the main border gate. Most of people going through Mong Cai Border Gate use "border citizen cards", which grant them them a duty-free allowance of VND2 million worth of goods a day. Vocational training highlighted in new rural development As many as 660,000 rural workers received vocational training in the period 2010-2013, mainly in husbandry and fishery, as part of the national new rural development program. Vietnam now has approximately 25 million rural workers, of whom just 5 million have received vocational training. As farm land shrinks due to rapid urbanisation and modernisation, vocational training plays an increasingly important role because it boosts farm incomes. Nguyen Minh Nhan, head of the personnel department under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, said the ministry has devised rural programmes that provide both agricultural promotion and vocational training for rural labourers. They also helped farmers sell their products and services. "The model of household production is still common in Vietnam's rural areas, which means rural labourers are mostly involved in farm work," Nhan said, adding the percentage of rural laborers with … [Read more...]

Enjoying acoustic music the old-fashioned way

Minh Truc A guest at Nep Cafe - Photo: Courtesy of the cafe Unlike other glassy and classy coffee shops with fancy gardens and luxurious ornaments, this café is limited to the size of an apartment, which makes it interestingly different. Yet its small size will not discomfort you in any way as the interiors are wisely arranged and the space is decorated in vintage style with little lovely things that gives you a cozy and warm feeling just like you are visiting a friend's house. In fact, the most special thing about Nep Café that makes it stand out from others is beautiful acoustic music performed every night by the shop's owner Le Cat Tien, whose sister is famous Danang singer Le Cat Trong Ly, and her friends. Acoustic café is not new in HCMC, but authentic acoustic music that uses only the singer's voice and guitar, without any sound equipment, even microphone like Nep's music, is considered very rare in HCMC.
