The Hanoitimes - The Ministry of Health held a ceremony in Hanoi on June 22 to receive the certification of the World Health Organisation (WHO) recognizing Vietnam’s national vaccine management system that meets international regulation standards. Vietnam orders recall of stroke pills after discovery of toxins

Vietnamese health authorities on Wednesday ordered a recall of a batch of dietary supplements used alongside drugs to treat cerebrovascular accidents (CVA) imported from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) after they found toxic substances in their ingredients. The Food Safety Department (FSD) under the Ministry of Health issued a decision yesterday to suspend, revoke, and destroy a batch of Angong Niuhuang pills, which was found being imported into Vietnam from the DPRK in June this year. The decision was made after the FSD received a notice from the Pharmaceutical Management Department (PMD), also under the health ministry, saying that lot 8-2 of supplementary foods named Angong Niuhuang pills contains lead, mercury and asen - which are all harmful to humans. Ministry ensures full vaccine in national immunization program

Amid increasing demand of vaccine and severe shortage of the drug, Nguyen Tat Dat, Deputy Head of the Ministry of Health's Pharmaceuticals Management Department July 10 said that the Ministry ensures enough vaccine in the National Expanded Immunization Program. Moreover, the Ministry always facilitates the condition for importers who supply other vaccine on private needs of people. However, for a time, there was a shortage of vaccine for private need in some localities as the supply can't meet the increasing demand of parents. In addition, it takes time to test the product quality before launching to the market. Dat also revealed that more vaccine will be imported in the time ahead. More vaccines to be available from late July

Deputy head of the department Nguyen Tat Dat said 10,000 doses of imported PENTAXIM vaccine (5 in 1) will arrive on July 20. Another 35,000 doses will be available in August and September. Shipments of 100,000 doses of INFANRIX HEXA vaccine (6 in 1) are expected to arrive on August 15, while 145,000 doses of chickenpox vaccines will be imported in batches in mid-July, August and September, he said. Accidental injections cause babies’ death last year: Vietnam police

Police in the central province of Quang Tri have concluded that a nurse's accidental use of another vaccine caused three babies to die after reportedly being vaccinated against hepatitis B at a local hospital last year, a source told Tuoi Tre on Tuesday. >> Vietnam suspends hepatitis vaccine after newborns' deaths Accordingly, on July 20, 2013, nurse Nguyen Thi Thuan of Huong Hoa District General Hospital, meant to vaccinate three babies against hepatitis B but used the wrong injection, the source said, adding that this led to the children's deaths just 10 minutes after being vaccinated. Registrations of unqualified Indian medicine revoked

The Health Ministry has revoked the registration numbers of four kinds of medicine produced by an Indian company, as they violate quality standards. The company is XL Laboratories Pvt, Ltd, based in Delhi, India. These medicines include Tinidazole 500mg, Roxl-150, Diclofokal, and Anesir; their registration numbers are VN-7891-10, VN-13935-11, VN-5689-10, and VN-7888-09 respectively. The first two medicines do not meet dissolution standards, while the third is unqualified in terms of content and foreign matters, and the fourth does not satisfy the content standard. In addition, two other kinds of medicine were recently found violating quality standards. They are Tifaxein-100 with registration number VN-3448-07, and Kalflam, with registration number VN-1672-06. Vietnam orders recall of Indian drug Relab 20%

The Pharmaceutical Management Department has suspended the circulation of Relab 20%, an Indian-made drug solution for intravenous infusion, and ordered recall of the drug from the market because of its harmful side effects. The drug, which contains albumin active ingredient to treat shocks, burns and blood protein reduction, was manufactured by India's Reliance Life Science Pvt. Ltd and imported into Vietnam by Central Pharmaceuticals Company No. 2 (Codupha) under Registration No. VN-8805-09. The distributor of the drug in Vietnams is Kim Chau Pharmaceuticals Co Ltd. The department requests that the importers and the distributor of the drug to urgently remove the drug from the domestic market and report the result of the recall to the department before July 25, 2013. VN orders recall of 17 Kanebo skin-whitening products

Vietnamese health authorities have ordered recall of 17 kinds of skin whitening cosmetics produced by Japan's Kanebo Cosmetics from the market since they contain a substance that could have harmful effects on the skin. The Health Ministry's Pharmaceutical Management Department The suspension was made more than a month after Kanebo Cosmetics announced a recall 54 skin-whitening products from all over Asia since these products contain Rhododenol that could cause white patches and uneven coloring on the skin. Among the above 54 products are two very well-known ones: Kanebo Blanshir Superior and White Deep. The department requests that Hanoi-based LK Trading Co Ltd, which has imported these products into Vietnam, rapidly remove them from the market and report the results of the recall to the department before July 30. Kanebo recalls skin cosmetics in Asia, including VN

Vietnam's health authorities have requested the representative office of Japanese cosmetics company Kanebo Cosmetics to update the list of products subject to recall and publicize it. The Health Ministry's Pharmaceutical Management Department made the request after the Japanese cosmetics company on June 4 announced a recall of 54 skin whitening products from all over Asia because of fears they could cause white patches and uneven coloring on the skin. Among the 54 products are two very well-known ones: Kanebo Blanshir Superior and White Deep. The cosmetics contain a whitening substance named 4HPB (4-(4-hydroxyphenyl)-2-butanone) which was developed and called Rhododenol by Kanebo, the company said in a press release on Thursday. To get a circulation visa for an imported drug, the importer just needs to register with the pharmaceutical management department under the Ministry of Health. What is more, the current import tariffs are not favorable for local drug producers. Most imported drugs are subject to a 5% duty. Many local firms have adopted WHO's Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP-WHO), but they are facing an intense price competition from products imported from India, South Korea, China, and even the countries whose pharmaceutical sector is not at all strong globally like Colombia and Bangladesh, said Dung. Previously, the ministry had maintained there were no problems with the vaccine, but came to the decision after the fatalities climbed to nine between last November and March 26. Most probiotics sold substandard quality standardsndards

HCM CITY — Nearly 50 per cent of probiotic products available in the domestic market do not meet quality standards, experts say. Dr Pham Hung Van from the HCM City University of Medicine and Pharmacy's probiotics department said a recent testing of products in the domestic market showed probiotic content was lower than the amount stated on the label. Some of the products contain probiotic strains that could cause vomiting and diarrhoea, Van said, adding that there were even some that do not include any probiotic ferment. Early this month the Pharmaceutical Management Department ordered the recall of two probiotic products because they failed to meet quality standards - the Biolac powder and the same drug in 500g capsule form.
