Vietnam – Canada Cooperation: Continuing to Be Progressive and Mutually Beneficial

As of this year, Vietnam and Canada have enjoyed 40 years of diplomatic relations (1973-2013). This occasion calls for celebration, which Canada has welcomed through events like the 40th anniversary piano concert featuring world-renowned Canadian pianist Alain Lefevre and the 40th anniversary delegation visits to Can Tho City and Tra Vinh Province. The Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee hosted a meeting on July 2 to mark the 40 th anniversary of Vietnam-Canada diplomatic ties and the 146th Canada Day.Addressing the celebration, Vice Chairman of the municipal People's Committee Hua Ngoc Thuan stressed that over the past 40 years, the long-lasting, stable and comprehensive partnership between the two countries has been consolidated and developed.The two sides have maintained all-level delegation exchanges, he added.According to Thuan, in 2012, bilateral trade surpassed 1.6 billion USD, nine times higher than 2011. HCM CITY (VNS)— HCM City People's Committee hosted a meeting yesterday to mark the 40th anniversary of Vietnamese-Canadian diplomatic ties and Canada's 146th National Day. Addressing the celebrations, the vice chairman of the Municipal People's Committee Hua Ngoc Thuan stated that over the past 40 years, the stable partnership between both countries has been considerably developed. Trade between HCM City and Canada reached more than $265 million in 2012. Currently Canada has 50 ongoing projects worth $91.5 million in the city. My Tam wins Best Asian Artist at MAMA 2012 Singer My Tam has become the first and only Vietnamese artist to receive the Best Asian Artist title at the Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA) 2012. Singer My Tam. The award ceremony was held in Hong Kong on November 30. My Tam could not attend the award ceremony in person because of her Vietnam Idol 2012 responsibilities. In a video message shown at the event, Tam said it was her great honour to be awarded such wonderful spiritual gift this year. HCMC university business grads enter global workforce with Canadian diplomas

The Ho Chi Minh City University of Industry (HUI), in partnership with the Saskatchewan Institute of Applied Science and Technology (SIAST Canada,) conferred 87 graduates with the two-year Business Administration diploma Saturday. Canada 's bilateral merchandise trade with Vietnam has increased steadily over the past decade, standing more than four times greater than in 2000. According to Audri Mukhopadhyay, Consul General of Canada in Ho Chi Minh City , bilateral trade reached an all-time high of nearly 1.4 billion USD in 2010. Merchandise imports from Vietnam were valued at 1.2 billion USD, while exports were worth 264.7 million USD. According to Canadian statistics, the stock of Canadian direct investment in Vietnam was 89 million USD at the end of 2009. Canada and Vietnam are currently in negotiations toward a Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (FIPA).
